Hey. I've looked at a number of sources and I cant seem to find a very clear and distinct difference between strategic alliances and networks? To me they seem very similary

Could somebody help me make a clear distinction between the two? Definitions and examples are welcome.

Im not 100%, though from my notes this is what i gather,

Strategic Alliance is like two businesses joint through an agreement, usually taking advantage of a situation like those Petrol Station/Supermarkets, Woolworths Caltex.

Whereas, Networks are like two business joint, not so much permanant as a strategic alliance, more of a contract with the other business for certain things. Like Qantas using British Airline airports for landing since qantas wouldnt make an airport at the UK.

Strategic alliances are the joining of two businesses (like merger) and join their resources.

Network structure is when one business have an ADMINISTRATIVE control over another business to produce a product. Eg. Nike and Espirit don't produce their products, they have administrative control over other businesses that produce products for them UNDER their name.

A network is where a business subcontracts a task to another business who runs it under the behalf of the business

your definition of a network sounds more like outsourcing. :s my textbook has them under one heading as well.

Networks are when One business has Administrative power over other businesses (Or Through Outsourcing) , which are all inter-related to the production of a business.
E.G Nike, has less than 100 staff members who work DIRECTLY for nike. They have successfully outsourced EVERYTHING in regards to their product. Their Manufacturing is Not owned by Nike. Their Marketing Team is Outsourced. Even the team who decide which products to release next, are outsourced.

Outsourcing is where a business get a specialist firm to do tasks which it would once have normally done. Eg legal tasks, accounting etc.

Strategic alliance - Two or more businesses join together, pooling their resources; this can be done in both domestic/international markets and this strategy is often seen as a 'win-win' situation for both businesses.

Network - Provision of administrative control of another business or set of businesses that perform all functions needed to produce and sell the product. Essentially, network structures buy a finished product with their brand name on it and then contract other businesses to distribute and sell it.
