In your textbooks, ions will mostly be encountered in solution :). Just remember that they can exist in the atmosphere too...physics students should be familiar with the concept of ionised gases :).

oh yea... the ionosphere, good old physics :)

i just misunderstood what was being said. but anyway, do you just name the state of the ions in a gaseous solution (g)? if they made up (aq) for water solution and (soln) for non-aqueous solution, why not name gaseous solution something else?
