Probably a little bit in first (can get by without one) and moreso in second, and it just gets more especially 4-6th. I'm talking about Adelaide but I presume it's pretty similar elsewhere.

UWA start you off second semester of first year. That's not where the fun is - palpation is where it's at.

Um that's the thing with med...it's different at every uni.

And you don't learn surgery until after you graduate.

Well, we used auscultated for (officially) the first time in physiology lab today. Only listening for normal heart sounds though, just looking for a clear sound to match against ECG.

I won a prize for having the best sinous rythm. Hooray for me, and my perfectly functional heart!

3rd and 4th? We were told that they're bloody hard. Of course, that was an anatomist talking, so let's see what the clinicians say.

if you practice on a horse you can hear all 4 heart sounds... but dont be scared if they miss a beat, horses do that when resting.
btw, hi kimmeh! havent seen you in ages!

yeah humans ones are actualli just subtle.. cos they are smaller than horses..
if u had pathology in human .. u can hear it.. and it sounds weird..

electronic steths can hear the 3rd 4th in all humans.. cos they are so sensitive.. see physiology book

Curiously, do horse hav the mitral, pul, aortic and tricuspid auscultation areas in the same place as humans?
and apex beat too?

id imagine theyre in different locations, seeing as they're horses!
but in reply to the original question, at monash cardiovascular is covered in first semester of second year so thats when it might be a good idea to buy a steth, but theyre only strictly required in the clinical years (3-5)

Yeah, but they'll be expensive no matter what you do. For things that you MUST buy (like food and stethoscopes) it's not the real expense that matters as much as the relative expense.

I agree. I dont mind hauling money out for stethoscopes/food provided theyre reasonable, i mean, i wouldnt be doing much with an electric cardiology stethoscope. If a dog steps/bites it then $1000 goes down the drain pretty easily. I guess its okay for doctors/med students to get them because i highly doubt that their patients would do the same as a vets :p

On another note, i actually used mine *propely* (trying it on my dog isnt included) today and I feel very special. I had a dog show to attend to and the dogs were absolutely gorgeus! *points to display pic*
