Can anyone explain to me the pathway to studying and getting a degree in psychiatry? Im hoping to get into unsw med next year as an undergraduate. Would I complete my 6 years, then specialise in psych while working?

Absolutely--it will take a minimum of 12 years: six years at UNSW, one year paid general internship before applying for five years of psychiatry training. You would be working as a psychiatry registrar during your training. Further information here is summarised below.

FRANZCP said:
Prerequisites for applying to enter the Fellowship Program are:

- successful completion of a medical degree
- at least one year (FTE) of general medical training
- current general registration as a medical practitioner in Australia or New Zealand.

Applicants are selected for psychiatry training based on their suitability, skills and experience.

^Nice Schmeag

Psychiatry is a specialty that is actually not that difficult to get in. There is a lack of applicants in comparison to almost every other specialty so wanting to do psych is awesome and given there is a huge push for mental health it will be a specialty in demand. Not sure how neuropsych training is like though....
