Hi everyone, I am a year 10 student who is picking stage 6 subjects soon. I am pretty sure of what I want to take, but I want to take 2 more units and I am unsure of which two to take.

The subjects I am pretty certain about are:

English Extension 1 (3U) - hopefully
Maths Extension 1 (3U)
Ancient History (2U)
Legal Studies (2U)
Music 2 (2U)

This brings me to 12 units, however I would like to take 14 units in year 11 (so I can see what my performance is like in the subjects and drop 2 units in year 12).

I am thinking of taking economics, but I'm not too sure as I have heard it can be confusing and a lot of work. I do not want to take any sciences at all. I also want to know if taking 14 units in year 11 would be beneficial, or just unnecessary work.

In year 12 I also hope to pick up History Extension (dropping one of my 2u subjects). I was also wondering about the work load of the subjects I am considering (it might be a bit much), and I was also curious what other people's experiences were with them.

thank youu :)

When they say ext 1 english or maths, they are also referring to the relevant 2U subject. To do ext english or maths you need to do advanced maths and english, so it's 3U for each.
ooohhhh wth i didnt know that, thankks

Economics is pretty good. For me personally, I find it easy as my teacher provides my class with all the notes we need and we just discuss the notes and topics in class and do some practice questions. It can be a bit of a demanding subject at times, but if you keep on top of making notes you should be fine. Only pick it if you think you will kinda enjoy it though, otherwise it may be hell (my friends hate it and are gonna drop it).

Also I feel like 14 units may be pretty stressful, because I do 13 units and it can be a bit much. If you're dedicated though, go for it. If you aren't quite in a good study pattern yet, try and form a pattern before starting year 11 otherwise the 14 units will suck you in and it will be hard to form a good pattern with all the work (at least from my experience lol). But yeah, your year 11 marks don't really matter unless you are applying for early entry (but some unis like USYD and UNSW don't offer early entry unless you are considered 'disadvantaged'), so I guess it is a good time to see if doing extra units will work for you.

Anyways, goodluck! :inlove:

would not recommend 14 units. especially if you have difficulty managing time and if you dont already have a study routine

also to get a feel of what econ is like, look through the syllabus.if your school publishes assessment notifications for each grade on their website, check the year 12 assessments for econ that have happened this year

i guess u could also take 14 units for a term, then drop down to 12. but i would not recommend a full year of 14 units

don't do fourteen units, trust me. Especially since you already have 7 individual subjects, 8 is absurd and you'll be swamped with revision come exams.

i'm also choosing my subjects right now, however, my older sister did 14 units in year 11 and it really stressed her out. you have a lot of different subject areas already so i think you should stick with what you have. if you really want to do eco, you could maybe swap it for legal studies? it depends on which one you think you would prefer.

Yh same my sister (currently yr 11) does 3u eng and math alongside 3 sciences (chem, phys and bio) w visual arts (cus thats the only subject that runs w her subjects) and she is barely able to manage her time not to speak badly of her but she is getting like between 53-88% for all her subjects (she hasnt achieved any 90% or above yet) so yh maybe 14 units is NOT the way to go

but she did come top 10 in all of her subjects so again…
(i blame the students and that our skl is 400-something)

I'm in year 11 this year, trying to decide what to drop for year 12 cause ain't no way I'm doing 14 units (I've picked up ext 2 maths). 13 was hard enough tbh and I had a bunch of study periods during the day (most of my classes were period 0 and 7 - I do not recommend, if you can avoid the early classes, definitely do unless you like getting up super early in the morning just to have enough mental energy to go to school)
