Im just wondering, since in 3 unit the substitution is given, do we have to use the one given or can we use an easier one (where applicable)..

eg: sqrt x^2 + 3 given use "x^2"

- can we use "x^2 + 3" instead??

thanx

Yes, you HAVE to use the one that is given.
