Surveying @ UNCLE? (1 Viewer)

Hey all, just wondering if anyone can give me a breif description of what the Bachelor of surveying at Newcastle is like.

I'm doing HSC this year and in the process of doing Uni preferences. I've currently got the civil engineering/surveying combined program as my first preference, but after reading in another thread about the insane levels of maths required for civil, I'm re-thinking it.

I want to be a surveyor when I graduate, and as there doesn't seem to be any masters courses for surveying, I had the idea that I could do the civil/surveying couse then do masters in engineering management...but to just do surveying I doubt I'd need all that.

Any pointers would be awsome =-) Thanks!

well i've done first year of civil which is identical to first year of surveying

either b surv or combined with engineering are fine to become a surveyor

the single degree would probably be better if you want to be a surveyor, because you're out of uni 1 year sooner, there's 2 or 3 more SURVxxxx courses that you lose in the combined degree, and you avoid the worst of the maths from civil engineering

first year you'll study maths, physics, engineering mechanics, computer programming, "engineering practice", and maybe a bit of surveying as well

first year surveying covers your basic levelling and electronic distance measurement, drafting and setting out curves e.g. for roads with long & cross sections

that's as far as i know, but i really enjoyed the surveying component of first year civil engineering

the only downside to Newcastle's surveying degree is they tend to thow you in with the civil engineers in various courses you probably don't really need to be a surveyor in general, but then if you want to work mainly on building sites that's a good thing

EDIT: don't let the maths scare you, they teach you what you need to know, as long as you keep working at it all the way thru you'll be fine

Hmm...Well I think I'll go with the single surveying degree. I'm not sure what area I want to specialise in though...Mine surveying looks alright (good salary).

Would you know of any companies that offer surveying traineeships? All I can find is centennial coal.

Btw, thanks for the reply.

Not a traineeship but just saw this on Seek - "Surveyor - More positions than the Kama Sutra, Numerous jobs for Mine Surveyors!". Lol :D

Was through a recruitment agency though so I dunno what company.

<3...Thankyou :uhhuh:

I don't know whether to apply for traineeships now, or to wait until next year...or until after I graduate...

Surely if you got a traineeship before or while you're studying they'd help cover the costs of your degree. Or maybe they'd make you study at TAFE instead. I don't even know if TAFE has surveying though lol.

I guess if you find a place you'd like to work with, find out how the traineeship works with them first.

Edit:
