hey, just wondering if anyone can help me out.

i am currently summarising my history notes under the syllabus dot ponts and im not sure which events, people, evaluations etc go under which headings for indochina. if anyone can reply with suggestions for which events etc go under certain syllabus 'key features' headings i would really appreciate it. once im finished i will certainly post the syllabus summaries for Germany, WW1 and Indochina on the BOS resources page.

also i was just wondering what other people think of the indochina textbooks they have used. i have used sutherland, cantwell, pollock, harpur, wood. what do you people think of them.

additionally, has anybody asked teachers or the advice line if it advisable to quote our teachers and the notes that they issue or dictate and use it as an historian's interpretation. my teacher reckons you can do it but their opinion wont have much 'force' in comparison to other historians who have written books and are considered to be historical experts

Ill get back to you for the first bit.

For the 2nd...you technically shouldn't quote your teacher and pass it off as an historical interpetation but many will arue that if you sound convincing enough, you'll get away wit it. Even so, you certainly can use the notes given to you by your teacher and the hisotical intepretations and quote IN them.

Check the historiography stickie at the top of the Modern History forum for more about this.

These are the groups.

• the media
• nationalist leaders
• soldiers
• the Vietcong
• villagers of South Vietnam and Cambodia

They fit into most events so you can't just take one and put it under a specific heading,

1954 French defeat at Dien Bien Phu, Geneva Conference
1956 postponement of elections in Vietnam
1960 formation of the NLF and the beginning of its insurgency in South
Vietnam
1963 overthrow of Diem
1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident
1965 commitment of US and Australian ground troops to Vietnam
1968 Tet offensive
My Lai massacre
commencement of the Paris Peace talks
1969 death of Ho Chi Minh
1970 confrontation at Kent State University
US extends operations into Cambodia
1971 release of the Pentagon Papers
1973 defeat and withdrawal of US troops from Vietnam
1975 unification of Vietnam
fall of Lon Nol regime in Cambodia
1979 Vietnamese victory over the Pol Pot regime.

They are in chronological order and match with the syllabus points, now that I take a closer look at it. Which events are you specifically having trouble with?

im mostly having trouble with:

sources, nature and development of the conflict in Vietnam from 1960

the nature of political, social, economic and military policies within South and North
Vietnam and their consequences

Is it just me or do they overlap with one another. technically we havent done the unit on indochina, im just trying to get ahead cause if i dont ill fall behind and end up bludging. it seems that part of the information/events that you would put under the first heading rely on information from the second one ie diem and his family being a dick to everyone, which in turn creates more unrest and rebellion among the viet cong and the north attacks on the south.

it seems illogical to place the second heading after the first when they are interdependent of each other and the second is a cause of the first.

anyway, i might just be stupid or not seeing the whole picture cause we havent learnt it in class yet and most of the time it seems so muchclearer when my teacher explains it rather than simply reading from a textbook.

ahh, you haven't actually started the topic. That explains alot. While it is a good idea to get a head start, making comprehensive notes right now would be a difficult thing.

Originally, you asked for event and people to be placed under headings. Now you're stating the syllabus dot points. You're confusing me :p

The syllabus is just a list and although MOST do overlap, some don't and you have to decide where to put them to fit into your style of note making.

it seems illogical to place the second heading after the first when they are interdependent of each other and the second is a cause of the first.

In that case, you wouldnt separate them :p or place one after the other. Keep them together and link them up into an explanation rather than a narrative summary of textbook information.

It might be better to read the textbook (Cantwell's is extremely short) as an overview rather than jumping straight in and making notes already. Once you do start the topic though, make sure you keeo up to date with notes for each lesson and cover whatever syllabus points YOU feel the need to cover even if you didn't cover it in class that day.

It should make alot more sense once you start the topic and I can't help you any further because it's a little difficult to squeeze the entire topic into one nut shell and give you a whole overview.

Well, I quoted Sutherland in the HSC and he was my teacher... but he had written a book on Indochina.... I think you should use a historian who has had published work on the subject, otherwise the examiners may think you are just making stuff up.

I quoted Sutherland in a test...and he marked it...and laughed when I got it back. He was my teacher too. Yeah. Quotin from textbook is fine, my teacher (not Sutho anymore... :( ) is encouraging it for USA especially.

As for my summaries (which are incomplete and trials are SOO soon!!GAHHAHAH!
I've divided the syllabus into 1.1, 2.1, 3.1 etc...and cause they overlap i'll do this:

Abbreviations used in Summary:
P.A. – People’s Army (later formed the beginnings of Viet Minh)
VM – Viet Minh
VNA – Vietnamese National Army
ARVN – Army of the Republic of Vietnam
Giap – General _ Giap
Ho – Ho Chi Minh
DRV – Democratic Republic of Vietnam
DMZ – Demilitarised Zone
RV – Republic of Vietnam (created by Diem)
Diem – Ngo Dinh Diem, President of Republic of Vietnam (1955-1963)

1.1, 5.1 Dien Bien Phu
Background:
French chose the site which was a 16km long valley in November 1953.
It was an attempt to deny the People’s Army gain access to Laos and also to destroy P.A’s supply bases.

Etc etc. Thats the beginning of my Indochina summary. Then for keys terms and concepts, I provide definitions for each term at the beginning of the summary...just so I remember...or try to.

All my summaries are in that format for every subject...I'm getting really anal about it!
