i received my first pay today, and to my surprise, the figure was no where near what i was suppose to earn (including tax deductions). so i was wondering whether it was the tax or they screwed up in calculating my wages..?

to give you some figures..
i earnt $456.75 in a week, but only got paid $240 into my bank account.

whats goin on.!?!???!

PS. this is my first tax paying job, so i dont know much about paying tax..

have a look at your pay slip, that will tell you if the stuffed up your hours or pay rate... sounds like theyve done something wrong.... i get $651 before tax and $560 after tax so thats not even $100 tax...

I just did a quick calculation for you Too Lazy. They deducted roughly 47.5% of your pay.
Let me guess, you never gave them your tax file number, did you??

I pay ~27% in tax instead of ~15% (I was quite shocked at my first pay slip), apparently I mustn't have ticked that I wanted to claim the tax free threshold.

As long as you earn below the tax cutoff, You'll get a group certificate and get your tax deductions back when its tax time.

Check in with your wages people to make sure they've applied you TFN

But this calculator, you didn't give your tax file number.

You can always change that. Usually you wouldn't claim the tax free threshold is it was your second job. Your employee must allow you change it!
