Personally my favourite novel is Vikram Seth's An Equal Music. However, I think that probably in terms of 'brilliant' writing, Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisionwood Bible is the cream of the crop. The characterisation is amazing.

Oh, it terms of humourous writing, I can't go past Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. Love it!!
