Oh and another scholarship you may be interested in is the Military Scholarship. They give you some absurd amount like 14,000 (and on top of that a rental allowance, textbook allowance, medical/dental care) for x years if you work for them x+2 years. The problem is if they need specialists they'll outsource so they want you to specialise in general medicine or aviation medicine. I don't want to have my career opportunities constrained.

No estel...with bonded places you still have to pay your HECS...I think you are getting it confused with the 'MRBS' in which case I'd understand why you're calling it a deferred place. With MRBS you have the option of 'chickening out' and paying back the scholarship plus inflation but with the bonded place you do not.

oh thats the australian defense force scholarship right?
they make you a cadet and its actually x+1 years you have to work with them (x being the number of years you go under the scholarship whilst studying med)
You actually earn the amount a cadet does in the army/navy/airforce whilst you study, and get all the allowances you already stated. The salary increases as you progress through your degree, it's about $29k for students in their final year of med (taxable income however)

you can still get out of bonded by paying the govt back the equivalent of their contribution. About 16k each year of med, including inflation, cpi changes etc.
it's shown in this pdf from the govt site

www.health.gov.au/internet/wcms/Publishing.nsf/Content/health-workforce-bmp-student.htm/$FILE/repaymentcalc.pdf

yep, but the govt. has to consider it as being of a sufficiently 'rural' nature

Deed of Agreement - The Bonded Medical Places Scheme said:
4.1 If You: ...
(d) do not commence Work in a District of Workforce Shortage in accordance
with clause 3.1(c);
(e) fail to Work in a District of Workforce Shortage for the Work Period in
accordance with clause 3.1(d); or
(f) render a Professional Service outside a District of Workforce Shortage as
prohibited by clause 3.1(e);
then You will have breached this Agreement, unless the Minister in his or her
discretion otherwise determines, and clauses 5 and 6 will apply.
...
5.3 If You breach the Agreement as listed in clause 4.1, then subject to the exercise of any Ministerial discretion in accordance with clause 5.8, the Commonwealth may claim from You as a debt the relevant proportion of the aggregate amount calculated in accordance with clauses 5.5 and 5.6 or 5.7. The "relevant proportion" is the proportion that the number of years that You do not Work in a District of Workforce Shortage bears to 6 years.
5.4 After You make a payment toward the amount You owe the Commonwealth under this Agreement, the total amount You owe is calculated according to clause 5.7.
5.5 The amount that You owe at the time of breach will be the aggregate of the
amounts paid by the Commonwealth to the University each amount being indexed
as at each March after the payment. The rate of indexation each March will be the
percentage change in the All Groups Consumer Price Index over the immediately
preceding Financial Year.
...
5.11 If Your breach occurs after You have completed Your Medical Course, You will
have up to three months from the date that You breach this Agreement in which to repay back to the Commonwealth in full the amount referred to in clause 5.3. If
You have not repaid the Commonwealth by this time the debt owed by You to the
Commonwealth under this Agreement may be recovered from You by the
Commonwealth in any court of competent jurisdiction.
I think I stand by my original assertion. :p

inasero, were you offered MRBS?

also, if you are accepting MRBS, do you have to pay the HECS fees?

i dont think he does
however, if you were offered an MRBS you'd still have to pay HECS. Usually you get offered a normal HECS place first then you get offered an MRBS via phone

With MRBS it says you have to commit to 6years of rural practice once you have completed their basic medical and postgraduate training. What if you want to specialise? Im pretty confused as to when you go to the rural place?

And one other question...It states that there are 100 MRBS scholarships available, is the 100 split between every uni in Aus that offers undergrad med? Or post grad aswell?
