Hey guys and girls,

I've found at my school that because it's Catholic and we're forced to do at least 1 unit of SOR that the candidature just doesn't try in this subject.

For instance, in the last assessment task we had to do, which was exactly the same as Question 14 of last year's HSC exam. I got 15/20 for this task, but very few people scored even 10 or above. The average was only 7/20.

My question is do you people find that at your school the candidature for SOR1 is very weak and often incredibly uninterested in the work because it's only 1 unit and usually mandatory?

While I'm doing pretty well at this subject, being ranked about 10th out of 180 students, the majority of people just couldn't care less.

I think perhaps a solution to this would be to let us choose our own religion to study as an option strand or something because I find Judaism incredibly boring but we're still forced to do it. If I could perhaps study Islam or Buddhism I'd be more inclined to pay attention since it'd be something I'm interested in. What do you think?

if your doing well, wahts the problem? meh get over it.
I don't have problem with my own performance, but people keep complaining that the candidature for this subject perform lousy. I want to know what you think on the issue of us being allowed to do our own study of a particular religion of our choosing rather than having the school choose one for us, since I think that would make students more inclined to be motivated to do well.

Wow, Tulipa, you had to do SOR2 for the preliminary course?

I probably should have done SOR2 in hindsight because I even beat a lot of them in this task (there's only 1 SOR2 class and 9 SOR1 classes) :p

I guess my grade is only the second year where my school has made the study of religion compulsory, and in year 11 this year there are 3 SOR2 classes so perhaps my year 12 is just slack  hahaha.

Wow! Well my school doesn't tend to do too well in either SOR classes, and we only got 1 band 6 last year out of about 200 students.

But yeah I just think independent learning where the students have a say in what tradition they'd like to study would be better because while a lot of students in my school find all the traditions boring, they'd probably pay that little bit more attention if they could study one they were even mildly interested in :p

but if students got the option, then there would be lots of arguing over which options they want to study and stuff....schools usually teach the options they have the resources for.
Yeah that's the problem :( My grade as I said is HUGE with 180 students doing SOR1 so it'd be a nightmare.

Oh well we'll just have to put up with it I guess :p and hope we do well

just do your own work and if your ranking is really good then don't worry about the rest of the class.
Yep and if the general trend in students is to be slack and we do well then we'll get a higher ranking and be scaled up :)

My school was a Catholic school, and the overall performance was pretty strong due to the fact that they offered Catholic Studies at the same time, hence anyone that didnt want SOR could just take Catholic Studies, most of whom bludged through it.

Yeah that was the same setup they had at my school prior to 2004. But then they noticed that quite a few people who were *sure* that SOR1 would not count towards their UAI actually did, and scales incredibly well for a 1 unit non-extension subject. Such was their decision to force everyone to do SOR1 or SOR2 because they consider it "easy marks" if people put some effort into their work.

doesnt think that students should choose their "religion" as students would make the wrong decision based on interest and not on how it will help them in the HSC ie some traditions are easier to do than others (depending on which Cross Religion study you do that is)
Hinduism and anything...*shudders*
:)

wont even go near the "should it be compulsory in a Catholic School" argument....

Oops, sorry for putting it in the wrong location snapper. I'm currently doing the Cross-Religion Study so I went there without thinking. :S

You are totally right in saying that some religions are easier than others, which is why I did Judaism for my last assessment task seeing as how it only has three variants to talk about, plus, after having studied Christianity for 13 years now, I'm sick of it despite the fact that I'm Christian :p But yeah, I know it would cause lots of managerial and organisational problems when it comes to deciding which tradition to study etc. etc. etc.

I have nothing against Hinduism (I really love studying it) but when it comes to the Cross Religion Studies, its a shocker (writings is probably the only interesting area and for me to say writings is interesting is a big thing!) ...... and as a Prelimin. Depth Study.....

Hinduism under the new changes will be really interesting

*interesting = any word you want to substitute!*

My school also didn't have any half-yearly exams for SOR1 either so I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I'm not sure about your school, but the trial HSC exam at my school for SOR1 is worth 40% so the first time I get a chance at an exam, I'm sitting for almost half the course's assessment :S

So I'll need to be incredibly motivated in studying for the trials because my ranks could drop like crazy in one task with that much weighting.

thats how it is for most schools that do 1 unit.....

btw the weighting comes from the syllabus

Oh ok, my bad.

I suppose you've gotta expect that for a 1 unit subject that only has 4 assessment tasks, and it's not as bad as History Extension which has their major task worth 60%.

But yeah, thanks for all the feedback guys and girls! Now I know that my original proposal was pretty lame but I guess that no matter what you do or how hard you try to motivate someone, ultimately the decision is theirs. Plus you're always gonna get some slackers no matter what the subject :p

Yeah, SOR1 at my school we had a speech, the ISP, a sighted extended response (all worth 20% each) and the trial worth 40%.

Our teacher says that he could've quite easily ran 3 tasks but then there'd be significantly higher weightings for each, which I wouldn't really like, so 4 tasks benefits me more.

Oh that last task of mine was shocking Lee .. I'm not going to say what I got. But it was less than average. I tried real hard too :( I just can't do in-class essays!

But anyway back to the point:
I was thinking of this when I got my marks back too. (I am at school with sniper_24.) And I must admit, if religion wasn't compulsory I wouldn't even give doing it for my HSC a single thought when I chose my subjects for MacKillop. However, I do find the work interesting, and that opinion has since changed.
In year 11 I was very arrogant of SOR just because it was compulsory, not because 'year 11 didn't count'.
But since October, I've really appreciated the work a lot more, but I've still stuffed up every assessment that we have had and my assessment mark would definately now be <20/50, with it being a 22 before this assessment we recieved back on the last day of term. And it's not that my teacher is bad: Miss West is an SOR1 HSCexam marker, and has had students achieve band 6s over the years.

What I'm trying to say is that I do have the motivation to achieve marks for SOR1. But I just can't seem to reach them!!

our SOR assessments are out of 50% total
my trial is worth 22.5%
how many assessments hav u had sniper if ur trial is worth 40%
weve had 3
our ISP was only worth 10%!
