that's an interesting article UIC (even if half of it is in Finnish ;) ), but to my way of reading it the chemicals that get released are automatic responses to the external threat - the tree doesn't consciously think 'oh crap' and then protect itself. It would be like how our body can fight a disease without us telling the good bacteria to eat the bad bacteria.
