I'm thinking of studying Commerce at UNSW next year, however, I have a feeling I may fall a lil short off the UAI cut-off.

Assuming the cut-off for Commerce hangs around 96.00 and I get a UAI of around 94,95+ ish.. how difficult would it be to transfer from Economics? (I know it'd be a UAC transfer.. so 50% UAI, 50% uni marks right?)

Also, if I was successful in transferring, would I continue from second year Comm. ? (say, if I wanted to major in Accounting & Finance)

I've been trying to find that out for the past few days.

I talked to the UAC Admission's Officer (Rebecca Kimber), and talking to her is like talking to a solid brick wall.

She contradicts herself twice, then gives the excuse that you'd need at least D average to get in, regardless of your year 12 UAI.

I was going to tell her "no you are lying" but then I decided to end the conversation with "Ok, don't worry, I'll submit a FOI act form" requesting it, then hung up on her..

Apparently UNSW isn't exempt from revealing NRSL cut-offs :)

Interesting. I'm interested in finding out the NRSL cutoffs for Economics and Arts/Social Science. I will go and ask them tommorow and if I don't get anywhere I will consider going through the freedom of information act.

I did this myself
I got a UAI of 95.25 and a GPA of 6.0 (distinction ave) in 1st yr and got into commerce

How difficult? if you get a UAI of low 90's and get a D or close to it averge, shouldnt be too hard - and getting a D average in 1st yr isn't as hard as getting 96 UAI..

Also, yes, you'd go straight into 2nd yr subjects (as you'll get 100% credit from your 1st yr studies)

Cool.. doesn't seem too hard to transfer with a close UAI I guess.
BTW. might be a silly question, but when does the Commerce course start to branch out into selected majors i.e. what year would one start picking subjects/majors?

Well, in first year, you have two electives (one each semester) so u can start your major then.
Even if you started in B.Ec, your subjects for your major will still count if you transfer to B.Com

Also to clarify, in B.Ec, you can major in anything that B.Com offers other than Actuarial Studies

I read in the Commerce faculty book that with Economics, one of your majors MUST be Economics. Would this have any effect since I want to major in Accounting and Finance?

(I may have misunderstood something you've already written)

Yes thats true

However! If you transfer to commerce, you're Acct/Fins majors wont be affected because you do the Accounting core subjects in 1st year anyway (coz they are compulsory) - therefore you do the 2 finance subjects as your electives, and away you go in 2nd yr
