Types of Data (1 Viewer)

Hey all

I a stuck on finiding out the meanings of the different types of data. Ie Discrete, Continous, Systematic, categorical. They seem to come up in the multis and i can never work out what is what. Some help here would be great as well it is tomorrow....

Hi Toranaman,

Categorical- A category suited to match the component of a word. For instance, Mammals (Koala) , Marsupials (Kangaroo) , Colour (Blue), Sports (Soccer), Disasters (Bushfires) etcc....

Systematic- A sample of size such as from a population of size "n", for every member of the population tested.


Discrete- A whole number. For instance, 10,9,8,7,6... these are defined as a whole number including age, street number, postcode, telephone,
Beware: If any number is said to have a decimal such as 5.1 or 6.25 or any decimal present, it is said not to be a discrete number.

Continuous: is usually collected by measuring. The speed of a car accelerating from a stop light changes continuously until the car reaches full speed. If you measured the speed exactly five seconds after the car started moving, the value would depend on the accuracy of the instrument used to make the measurement. It could be 35 mph, 35.1, 35.15, 35.1522356, and so on.

2 Types of data:

Numerical- Continuous (e.g temperature), Discrete (e.g no. of people in family)
Categorical- e.g favourite colour

Types of Sampling:
Random: everyone got same chance (e.g pull out of hat)
Systematic: First person chosen then others at intervals
Stratified: Measured in accordance with different strata e.g 70% Adults, 20 % children
