Yep, scaling makes them comparable. And no, there's actually quite a bit of info available about scaling. :)

UAC releases a percentile table every year (2001, 2002) and there's a summarised list here.

Thanks Lazaeus! keep up with teh good work!

So, just to reinterate what i have learnt, Scaling does not have anything to do with bands. But has something to do with UAI.

Aligned marks on the otherhand gives you cutoff for bands, but no one knows them! (not published) and these marks are less important because they are not for UAI. but by the same token important cause they decide the banding!

....& banding is important!!... for some reason?....

That's right... banding is only important because it decides whether or not you're on the distinguished achievers list. :)

It changes automatically depending upon how long you've been a member and how much you contribute to the forum... until eventually you can change it yourself.

So no. :D

So, i still don't get it... (afterprinting all those files above you gave me)...

"Scaled Mean" means the average in that course? in classical greek ext it was 45.5 in 2002 this means it was 24.9 more than Maths (and roughly physics)...

My point is.... can you please explain?

A scaled mean of 25 means the course had average scaling; above 25 means it had above average scaling. A scaled mean of 45.5 would imply that the scaling for Classical Greek Extension was far, far above average (the maximum is 50).

If that didn't help... be more specific?

YEAH! THANK

so the average for Class. Greek Ext. is 45.5, this means that the average is far greater than average (of 25).

So... this is just the average! there is always exceptions!

if what i am getting at is right, than scaling really means nothing!

UAC uses scaled marks to determine your UAI it think

BOS uses the aligned mark to determine your HSC mark

Lazarus' little diagram is most useful when understanding this

Raw HSC marks are aligned to bands by BOS and are reported in your certificates as HSC marks (these are aligned marks)

Raw HSC marks are also scaled by UAC to determine the UAI

Ok, but for me my main goal is the UAI (same as many).

So really i don't need to care about "aligned to bands by BOS" right?

Really what i need to care about is the "scaled by UAC for the UAI"

...but seeing what LAZ gave me (link to 'scaling mean')... is this what the SCALED marks are on AVERAGE for a particular course?

if so why is this of help????

It's only helpful because it gives you an indication of how a course has been scaled in the past - of course there are exceptions.

It's telling you that the course had above average scaling. :p

Before scaling, the marks for all courses are initially standardised to a mean of 25; so, after scaling, any course that has a higher mean was scaled up.
