Hey.
The UAI is not as simple as UAI 90 = top 10%, UAI 50 = top 50%.

Here are the corresponding UAI's to Percentile rank in state.

UAI | Percentile rank in state
99 - top 1.6%
98 - top 3.2%
95 - top 8%
90 - top 16%
80 - top 31%
70 - top 46%
60 - top 59% (ie BOTTOM 41%)

Median UAI : approx 68.

Attached as a pdf file is the complete table showing more uais and more precise percentile ranks.

90 - top 16%

Aiming for these though 60 sounds good - if I get above 68 i'll be cheering

This has been asked before. The reason behind this is because the UAI/Scaling system ranks all students against the School Certificate candidature. In other words students are ranked according the number of people who completed their School Certificate two years ago. In other words, a UAI of 90.00 would constitute to the top 10% of the School Certificate candidature but not necessarily the top 10% of the Higher School Certificate candidature. Obviously, there are some students who do not wish to continue to Year 11 and Year 12 and thus the total candidature in the end is reduced, which explains the percentiles you mentioned.
I think the reason that the ranking system is based on the School Certificate candidature is probably because universities would like to know the relative position of students in regards to everyone in the corresponding state candidature. In other words universities probably prefer to know your rank relative to about 82 000 students of the School Certificate candidature rather than your rank relative to about 64 000 students of the Higher School Certificate candidature because it is more accurate in determining your relative position to the entire state.
