Completely different in Australia though. New legislation means that no junior doctor can work more than 72 hours a week and there's no crazy 24 hour shifts or anything. The base starting salary is $55k pa which isn't great but not bad either. Also u gotta take into consideration that there will definitely be overtime added so realistically it's about 70k.

When do actually start getting paid, i mean is it after your 5-6 uni years (during residency) or after you actually become a doctor?

There are a lot of technical terms here (intern, resident, registrar, doctor etc etc). You are basically a doctor as soon as you graduate from your 5-6 years and start getting paid.

PGYX=Post graduate year X

PGY1=internship ($55k base w/o overtime for NSW and VIC)
PGY2=residency ($70k base w/o overtime)
PGY3=residency ($70k base w/o overtime)
PGY4+=registrar (variable, up to $130k)
You then eventually go on to become accredited and are called a specialist.

Note: this is the most common pathway for someone going into internal medicine/surgery. Its different for GPs, psychiatry, paeds, obgyn etc

I'm pretty sure Univeristy of Adelaide requires umat... it's just some people tell me that they accept people with 80+ percentile except you need about 95+ percentile in order to compete for an interview place... is that true?

iirc, they give preference to their own state applicants and hence have a lower cutoffs requirement for them compared to interstate applicants. but i would say, if u are interstate, u would need high 80s for an interview.

Re: Umat

Its okay mate, if you feel the need to lash out your frustrations on me I understand.

But seriously, maybe in a few days when you get over it you'll actually take my advice.
It's been a year, and reading your original post I have come to the conclusion that you are a pretentious bitch. :3

Re: Umat

I'm not trying to be! Not everyone is cut out to be a doctor, and I'm sure there are industries/career paths that you can excel and succeed in that are more suited to your strengths.

Re: Umat

The thing with umat though is that it tests way more than academic ability, from what I've seen, its more a test of natural skills and instincts.
All multiple choice has an element of fluke, but at the end of the day, if you are truly cut out for medicine, thenyou should be able to do well in this test without spending years and thousands of dollars on 'preparation' equipping you with skills that others possess naturally.

Bad luck if you didn't do as well as expected guys :(
But maybe youre not really cut out for med, and will actually be better off in other careers.
Or if you're really set on Med, do post grad or try again next year, but don't be one of those guys who go back again every single year and still never do well
lol
