According to a new add released by the "Eat More Lamb Organisation" (or somesuch name) it is un-Australian not to eat lamb on Australia Day because ANZACs fought and died in the trenches of Gallipoli (and presumably Europe - but no one seems to mention that) thinking of lamb on the barbeque.

Personally I think that this is a shameless exhibition of the commercialisation of a national day of mourning (eg ANZAC day) and debasses the legend of the ANZACs (though the legend has little basis in truth this does not excuse exploiting its emotional appeal).

Further I object to the nationalistic knee-jerk it triggers.

Whats evryone elses thoughts?

I saw an advertisment on tv the other day about this. It was profoundly stupid.

I don't like the use of the word un-Australian. I like the term typically Australian, you know I love the great Aussie BBQ, the classic country Aussie accent etc. But saying not having any of these things is un-Australian is a joke. I think it's used by the media to make us feel bad, and use our great patriotism for evil.

Exactly. What exactly is "Australian" these days? Not a great deal. The only common bind is multi-culturalism which indelibly opposes singular cultural identity.

Yeah well, the people who claim that these people are "tarnishing" the good name of Anzac Day are the same ones who criticise Me for celebrating my birthday on Anzac Day.

I think the ad is great. Anyone who takes it seriously needs their head checked.

thats a good point, im pretty sure sam kekovich says pretty much everything with tongue firmly in cheek.

but as a vegetarian, i feel slightly offended by the implication that i am unaustralian. and to say "anzacs fought for....." is a load of shit. the ANZACs did not go to war to protect our right to eat lamb. and before you start with the vitriol about dishonouring their memory, take note that ive marhced in the anzac march for the last 3 yrs, last yr as the banner bearer.

just my 2 cents.

and wat was that thing with walzing matildas swiping off with a lamb in the swag?

i dunno if its australian or un-.... to eat/not eat lamb on Australia day. It depends on What Australians have been eating on Australia day for the last 100 years or so. (i think it was called empire day for the first few years of federation)

It's actually a bit of a parody on being patriotic

Do you really think that the people at Gallipoli thought about figthing so future generations can eat lamb? and do you really think that people think thats what the soldiers thought?

It is obviously a joke, as the guy is acting as if he is the Australian Prime Minister and addressing the nation.

guys, sam pekovich is always like this. I don't understand why everyone is getting so offended by all this. Dave hugues is saying it's Austrlian to drive a holden, Shannon nole says it's Australian to follow the cricket, and god damn how about all those guilty ads that have been put on all the time about buying australian products.

Come on sam is only saying this in the way he knows how. It is satire, and he has been doing it on 110% tony squires and the fat for quite some time now.
