At Macquarie there's no such rule, you do need to apply for approval to re-do a unit for the 3rd time or greater for some divisions. Macquarie used to have a saying 'Easy to get in, hard to get in'.. The former might not still apply but the latter definitely holds!

in my faculty you can fail a subject only once. if you fail again you are out, but i dont know if there is limit to how many credit points you can fail

i dont know of anyone failing law last year..failing some of the commerce subjects...yes i know a few...but failing law?? nah...
