after many months of deliberation, i finally found something i want to do at uni - bachalor of business majoring in event managment / tourism, either at martin college, or southern cross both at the gold coast - is this limiting where i can go? also, the UAI cutoff is either n/a, or 65 (my estmiated UAI =80). this sounds really interesting, however does anyone know of anyone with first hand experience of the course (being at any uni)? is there a high demand for this type of career (tourism / event managment / resort ownership) in the gold coast region? does it pay well? thanks!!!

Well I study environmental management and tourism at UWS. There are actually 3 or so courses at uws relating to tourism. Theres the B of tourism with two different majors or theres the B of business (tourism).

The tourism subjects that I have studied so far, have been really interesting. I don't really know about event management, but I'm looking at doing that subject sometime next year.

As for jobs and pay. Jobs in tourism can be pretty hard to get, especially if there is a downturn in the industry, but I'm looking of getting into the government sector and into tourism planning, which generally has a very stable demand. I'd be guessing that pay will vary, depending on the area your specialising in and what sector the job belongs to.

If you have any more specific questions, I'll be happy to answer them :)

thanks! that helped a lot. i am kinda worried that ill end up going to uni and doing the course and it will be really interesting, and then i won't be able to get a job at the end. but the uni did promise that '90% of our graduates are employed by the time they finish the course'...? not sure though. tourism planning sounds good. i do the HSC this year, once i do that do u think it would be a good idea to ask local tourism business if i could do some work experience in the industry 2 help with scholarships n stuff? thanku!

It depends what scholarships your applying for. I don't know about other unis and private colleges, but my degree requires 400 hours of work experience before I graduate next april.

I don't think tourism businesses specifically have jobs available in planning. However, some major businesses might have resort planning. But have a look around.
