for the small letters at the top of words, in Word, go to
format
font
superscript
ok

or ctrl shift =

for small letters at the bottom of words, in Word, go to
format
font
subscript
ok

or Ctrl =

for the margins, there should be little ruler thingies around your page, drag them til their the right size.

Go to 'File' & 'Page Setup'. There will be something about changing margins

Damn, I thought this was about your proclaimation on how great essay writing was. And I was getting ready to challenge such a notion. Lucky I'm not doing Arts, or something. :)

If you get sick of the keyboard pressing and highlighting to do any of the above, you can dd buttons into your toolbars to do all of those things.

do the requirements mean they want a physical margin, like a border?......or just that they want the words to be typed 3cm from the edge of the A4 paper?

I would imagine they want a 3cm space between the edge of the page and the words - not an actual border. Probably for the markers to put their comments/marking.

Yeah its means 3cm of white space (so they can write comments). Its simple, just go to page setup and change all the margins to 3cm.
For footnotes (the little numbers) its in 'insert'
For double spacing theres a little icon up the top, just explore those.

Having a thread created to deal with university level essays would not make much sense when most lecturers have their own preferred style... The best people to talk to when you have an essay question are the tutors or the course's lecturer/s.
