ok so i got 88.35 and the uai cut off for my desired course is 91. should i still leave it as first preference or move to the alternative which will hopefully allow me to transfer? is it a waste of a preference? anyone else in a similar situation

I'd say keep it...if you don't meet the requirements for it they'll skip it and check your next preference...it would only be a waste of a preference if you weren't even close to the cut off for the first 8 preferences...

If it is what you want to do, then leave it as your first preference. You never know, the cut-off may decrease this year, and even if it doesn't you may still be accepted. It would not be a waste of a preference, unless you want to do something else other than that (but you have 9 preferences, so I'm sure you would have everything you wanted there).
