After the main round offers closed on the 4th, my friend had a sudden change in his desire for first preference. Is there any way he can still change his first prefrence before 17th and if possible what is the procedure?

Main round change of preferences have now closed. He can still change his preferences, but he will only be considered in the late round. What I suggest he does is keep his first preference as it is, that way he will be considered for the amin round, and then change it after the main round. He will not be guaranteed an offer in the late round, but at least he will receive an offer.

According to this: http://www.uac.edu.au/apply/change_pref.html You can still change your preferences, but they will be considered in the Late Round or Final Round (depending on when your friend does it). Main round applications have already closed.
