Hey guys, so I've been telling my mates recently that I want to do commerce majoring in finance at Usyd, but they've been telling me it is hard to get a job because so many people do commerce. I, too, have a small impression that a commerce degree might be a waste of money because of its oversaturation. Thus, I am considering data science, law or project management too. Can anyone give any insightful advice on this?

As a fellow student sitting the same exams as you, it's probably best to worry about after this month of exams. Maximising your atar now will expand the many degrees you could get into. However, I could be mistaken about the time-window you have for your preferences, but I doubt UAC is that harsh.

The problem that I am seeing here is that the opinion of your peers could potentially be uninformed (due to still being in high school and therefore not having attended university and/or worked in the field), which I believe would not give you the best insight into the Bachelor of Commerce. I would therefore suggest speaking to people that are in the field, whether it be university students or employees as they are likely to provide more accurate thoughts on this matter. In addition to this, keep in mind that a Bachelor of Commerce is a multifaceted degree and is not strictly limited to finance. This means that there are other fields that you could specialise in, either instead or alongside finance. In the case of USyd, examples include:
  • Marketing
  • Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management
  • International Business
  • Accounting
  • Business Analytics
In the case of a Bachelor of Commerce, supply of labour and the number of available employment opportunities depend on the major in question. Not all majors are the same, and finance could be less/more difficult to be employed in than other fields.

The same suggestion (although probably a more accurate one in this context) can be said about the legal industry, where competition is high among graduates, and where receiving a job offer typically requires meeting challenging criteria (including favourable university performance and gaining some form of work experience, such as through a clerkship).

Data science and project management both seem like interesting fields. If you believe you would be interested in studying a degree in either field (or any other field for that matter), there is nothing stopping you from doing so. In order to make an informed decision, you should also seek insight into both a degree with a focus on data science and the Bachelor of Project Management prior to making your decision.

I hope this helps! :D

Completely agree - don't stress about this right now, it's irrelevant. Just put your head down, do your HSC, and once you are done, you can start seriously thinking about this sort of stuff.

If you're looking ultra long term then data science is more safe as a lot of commerce jobs are probably the first to get automated (e.g. accounting) but in terms of being "oversaturated", you can probably say that about most fields.

If you're a good candidate you'll get a job, if you suck you won't get a job, so don't think too much about saturation.

Ok thanks. I was thinking of majoring in finance thru comm at usyd, but idk if this is a good idea because ive heard people say that doing commerce alone does not make you competetive.

Try pairing it with something then. You could do computer science or something like that if you want to get into finance. Even doing honours with commerce alone will help
