for me, knowing what the usyd course contains as well as unsw's current SBL course, I'd go to usyd (even though a science degree on top means jackall. At least usyd integrates the pbl system in better.

Hi there, I just got a UNSW offer, so I think I'll go there. I mean I always planned to go to UNSW; I have heard so many glowing reports from girls in the years above me.

Also, I had a long chat with my grandmother, who made a big deal about "being greedy" versus "following your heart". To top it all off, last night I had a dream about my grandfather (who passed away when I was 11) and he told me I belonged at UNSW doing Med/Arts.

Thankyou everyone once again for your helpful advice :)

(Well, except for the sweeping statements about my social life, or lack thereof - contrary to popular belief, I do plan to get involved in uni, and to get away from my parents)

To Lotto and Stella: Congrats on getting into UNSW, it's a pretty tough process. Hopefully I'll see you guys on medcamp - I'll be there as part of the group of second years who come to run activities etc. All the best - KFunk

Haha, well i'm certainly out of that game right now (girlfriend etc), though I can't speak for the intentions of others :p. And LottoX, as to what you should be expecting: you can expect a lot of socializing activities designed to help you to get to know us and your fellow first years. There will also be a trivia night, music/dancing, free drinks, sport/rec time, and some semi-optional hazing rituals. All in all it's worth coming if you can make it, especially from the social perspective.

hah
even then there'll still be a few people no one will EVER know because they simply dont socialise. So when you're in the same elective placement or whatever in 4th year you'll be like 'hey, ive never seen you before... EVER'

Wow! The thread is still alive! But yeah - Med students at UNSW do sound very cool indeed. I suppose the other thing is that you get some comradery because everyone does the same subjects; if you're doing a science degree everyone picks a different speciality so you never get the same kinds of relationships with your peers.

To help other future people who discover this thread, I also heard some "horror stories" of people who tried to go through the USYD program and then got denied entry into med when they'd finished their Science degree...med really is what I want to do, not science, so I think despite the money UNSW works better for me.

Can't wait to meet everyone! (not the "predatory seniors" though?!!?!) But I will make sure I go to the camp. I haven't been to a camp since philosophy residentials.

You'll only keep the money for a year, and since it's bell-curve, 1 person per year. Lame!
The money's for 5 years and it is stupid logic or no logic at all to claim that cos it's a bell curve only 1 person gets 80+(i dunno where u get ur info from)- alot of ppl get 90+ and 80+(lottos claim would mean 1 or no ppl got HD). Besides usyd wants the best students and they want them to be performing at that level, which is why they brought this in-they know that the students they r taking are capable of this unlike some others.
Btw Stella, congrats and u'll do well in med at unsw, but i would always have preferred usyd for the scholarship (according to pointdexter most med course r bout the same).

i say alot of things..

btw stella and haque
frankly i have friends in the BMedSc program and some have made med.. but i have also realised that the science course isnt as comprehensive or medically directed..

but i think med courses (MBBS) are dedicated to run u thru the science part in lik 2-2.5 yrs.. u realli just learn human bio.. unless ure at UWA then u get comparative anatomy too.. the Usyd program is good if u have other interest too (pity no honours yr within the 7 yrs)..

if u end up not making it at all.. and ure interested in being a clinician-scientist.. then consider doing thea B Sc with honours.. then apply for the 6 yrs MBBS/PhD program at UQ, Usyd etc.

Can I ask what its teaching hospitals are?
i can only think of campbelltown atm.. it kinda still UNSWs but they will now all have to share.

interestingly.. u can now do
MBBS @ UWS in 5
MBBS @ UNSW in 6
or
BSc/MBBS @ USYD in 7

tats heaps of choice .. =) when i was applying it was about 70 spots less in greater sydney..

oh yeah... the PC way to view ure degree..
-for those at Usyd... that BSc will let u try other things like maths, physics, chem ..
-for those at UNSW and UWS.. BSc's are a dime a dozen unless ure dying to do above subject and not medicine yet.... they arent tat great unless its honours... but u can add an honours degree in med sc for 0.5 to 1 yr extra. ;)

Congrats on getting a place in combined med at USYD! Is there a lower average to be maintained or has the whole average idea been scrapped?
