I'm just curious as to what this is. For starters, I'm not even 100% if it's a double degree or not. What do you exactly cover in it? What are the job opportunities available?

It's a different thing altogether.

USyd don't really do double degrees anymore, so "advanced studies" is like their equivalent. Instead of doing a 3 year single degree with one major, BSc AdvSt is a 4 year program with 2 majors (one which can be from any other faculty in the shared pool). This is pretty much exactly what happens in a double degree.

Lets say you want 2 majors in Maths and History respectively. At a different uni, this would be under a BSc BA double degree, but at USyd, you'd do a BSc AdvSt. Just an odd naming convention which allows them to cut down on the permutations of degrees. I think they wanted to copy UniMelb and really simplify their degree offering to about 10 key degrees.

Dalyell scholars is a seperate 'scholarship' program not worth in my opinion

actuary - calculate insurance rates.
data scientist - infer stuff from data, model data
statistician - the same as a data scientist basically
investment banker - 100k+ a yr from pulling all nighters and not sleeping making powerpoints, documents and chucking crap into excel.

actuaries do a little bit more than calculating insurance rates but from what I've heard/learned, the role is a bit menial with lots of report writing

Data scientist vs statistician... tbh data scientists are statistics people who can code and use higher end computational methods to deal with "new age" "big data" i.e. internet stuffs but same different

Yep statisticians use R (it is a powerful visualisation tool) and VBA etc to process data in its “usual” habitat (csv files). R and Visual Basic have been around much longer than data scientists.

Data scientists use more “CS” sorta things like Python to extract and clean data etc. wouldn’t be surprised if data scientists pass things back to statisticians since they are more equipped to do the statistical and mathematical interpretations.

70k out of undergrad in the corporate sector seems reasonable. Government sector would be lower.

Physics, computer science, maths, statistics, data science, economics, engineering could probably get these jobs if you can sufficiently demonstrate that you have the skill set to do the job. basically any degree that involves modelling and some coding, supplemented with outside prep.
In Australia, you aren't really pigeonholed by a uni degree that much, rather you just have to have a degree and demonstrate the skillset required.

you're never going to be able to avoid report writing and the usual menial work etc. However, it is possible that data scientists have more interesting jobs at the moment when compared to actuaries. With standardised rates, actuaries may now have less big brain work and more maintenance work, while data science which is more-so an emerging field, likely has bigger brain work.
