UWS welcomes Government funding for medical school

Date: 11/05/2004

The University of Western Sydney welcomes the news that the Federal Government will contribute $18 million towards a UWS medical school, as announced in tonight's budget.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janice Reid, says the funding commitment is good news for the University and, in particular, for the people in Sydney's west.

"We estimate that a minimum of $60 million is required to plan, build and establish a medical school, and we welcome this initial funding commitment, which is a significant first step.

"The University will continue the useful discussions we have commenced with the State and Federal governments to ensure we have sufficient funds for a state-of-the-art, new medical school to be ready for its first intake in 2007 or 2008," Professor Reid says.

Professor Reid says a new medical school based in western Sydney will be a major step towards reducing the severe shortage of 3,000 to 4,000 GPs, hospital doctors and specialists in Australia.

"A medical school will make a major difference to the quality and accessibility of medical services and inpatient care for the people in Sydney's west.

"We do not see ourselves in competition with other medical schools. We are looking forward to working collaboratively with Sydney University and the University of New South Wales to improve health care services by training more doctors for Sydney's west," Professor Reid says.

Traditionally it has been very difficult to attract and keep general medical practitioners, health professionals and medical specialists in western Sydney and nearby country areas. For every GP living in the Greater West, three are living in the rest of Sydney. Only one in six medical specialists in Sydney lives in the west.

Professor Reid said the University has been encouraged by the strong support it had received from both the Commonwealth and NSW governments for a medical school at UWS. "We have had productive meetings with the Federal Minister for Education, Brendan Nelson and the NSW Premier, Bob Carr and NSW Health Minister, Morris Iemma", she says.

"We are particularly pleased by the support of local Government members in Western Sydney, Kerry Bartlett, Ross Cameron, Pat Farmer and Jackie Kelly.

"The University already has the largest nursing program in Australia, and trains other allied health professionals such as biomedical scientists, occupational therapists, sport scientists and podiatrists, so we have the experience and health service networks to build on.

"The University will now talk with government about the additional support needed to build and staff the new school and where it will be situated," Professor Reid says.

'Homegrown' doctors for the Campbelltown Community

Date: 21/05/2004

The University of Western Sydney's Board of Trustees will consider the proposal to develop Australia's newest medical school in the Greater West of Sydney by 2008 at a special meeting next week.

Speaking today after a meeting with the Prime Minister John Howard and Federal Member for Macarthur Pat Farmer UWS Vice-Chancellor Professor Reid said a UWS medical school would herald a new era for the Greater West.

"We have a vision for medical training that will see young people from Campbelltown and nearby areas doing medicine close to home and practicing in their own communities," Professor Reid said.

In the years to come the population of South Western Sydney will grow by the size of two Canberra's. Yet only 1 in 6 specialists and 1 in 3 GPs live in the Greater West. This will place even greater pressure on hospital and GP services.

Hundreds of new medical graduates from the University over the next decade would help safeguard the quality of health care for the children, families and older residents of the Campbelltown area and beyond.

Professor Reid thanked the Federal Government for its support

"Should the UWS medical school become a reality the UWS Campbelltown Campus and hospital will be important sites for biomedical education and research into the future. Many future doctors would study at the University and do their clinical training at the hospital.

"This is an exciting development not only because it will alleviate the severe shortage of doctors in the West and South West but also because it will attract medical specialists, researchers and teachers to the Region in the years to come. All health services benefit from the presence of a medical school with a rise in the quality, availability and breadth of care," Professor Reid said.

The new medical trainees would be educated with other health professionals such as nurses, podiatrists, osteopaths and occupational therapists already studying at the University. This will build teamwork and mutual respect and bring a broad spectrum of better coordinated care to patients.

"The University is heartened by the enthusiasm shown by the Commonwealth and State Governments and our local communities for this proposal," Professor Reid said.

The University is committed to working towards creating a medical school that is world class and is accessible to students and families across the Region. Campbelltown would be a key beneficiary of this exciting project.

The University is still talking with the State and Federal governments about funding for the medical school, which will cost $60M in facilities and start-up costs in its first few years. "The Federal Government's $18M grant is very welcome but we are still a long way from having all the resources we need to make a start," Professsor Reid said.

Its ok for UWs to offer unimportant corses like education and business etc but who would want to be operated on by someone from uws honestly do you ever go to class and look around and think dam this uni lets anyone in, these people are so dumb

Peoples lives are going to be in the hands of people trained at uws rofl rofl rofl please someone tell me this is like an april fools joke or something??????????????

If the government is encouraging UWS to train doctors the government must be very desperate :)

What is the mark going to be to get in?? at NSW its like 99.5 or something at UWS it will probably be around 60

The people from Sydney who don't make it into UNSW will probably have UWS down as a second preference. I don't think you should assume the people who make it into UWS med will be stupid - do you have any idea how many people who get UAIs of 99.5+ get rejected from UNSW?

id agree with skywalker.. but most importantly is that.. u cant just open a med course.. like u would for business course..

they go thru lik 2 years of scrutiny.. befor gainin approval by AMC.. to start.. every doc who comes out of UWS will be competent..

proximity to a hospital is very good.. cos like most med schools are usualli next to or built in to a hospital for greater clinical exp..
in SA, flinders uni is the butt of jokes lik UWS.. but their med school is srsly hard to get into..
