hey...er, i recently took a trip down to my local uni (early acceptance yeah!)..and the average book cost for law is $130!!! ...even with the 10% co-op discount that's expensive!.....

How do you guys afford to buy these?.....god i only get like $160 a week....and there's not much work around here in winter...yah shyte......

Shaz - depends of the subject. Like asq said, you often need the latest copy because of new cases, but sometimes there *isnt* a latest copy - so u can get a second hand copy. Also they often have 'recommended' but not 'required' texts - which you can just borrow or photocopy from the library. Also you can photocopy new sections from the text from the library if you buy an older copy. It may be worthwhile waiting a few weeks into the course to see whether they actually use it or not, and to what extent so you don't "waste" your money

Talk to something like the SRC on campus. They may have a second hand book store, they may also have suggestions, since uni students not being able to afford expensive texts is not really unique Plus you can try getting jobs *on* campus if there aren't many jobs around Byron in winter

mmmh, ours isnt that great either, but her uni's may be good. Its more bout being able to ask for advice from them perhaps. Also look for scholarships, grants etc?

Seriously, wait a couple of weeks, so you can meet ppl and ask older students what they do, and also determine what you need to get

thanx timmii ans asquith for that...true that about on-campus work and second hand books. I have another question..not sure if i should be posting it ere but here it is..

I am enrolled in b business/b laws at scu, i have to choose a "strand" of business to specialise in...

i was having a "dilemma" because i love accounting, and am quite good at it (hehe mrs braggy pants) ..BUT, i hear that international business strand would give me better career options?.....i don't know how interested in international business i will be or how good i will be at it....also, if i did accounitng and law, what areas of law would i be practicing?

Shaz, ok i don't even know what international business is. Minai does it, so you should ask him. personally I think its safer to stick with accounting. It is a recognised skill that can be applied anywhere, and also teaches management skills. It can be applied to international business whilst the vice versa doesn't really work to the same extent, and you can still take ibus subjects i think at some point?

I do accounting, and I actually quite like it as well *blush*. I'll be majoring it at least Hehe asq, its not as bad as u elitist arts sudents think!

Shaz, do what you like, do what you are good at, and you will create your own career prospects. There will never be a shortage of demand for accountacy majors

once again, thank you both for all the help. seriously, i spoke to my university's carrers advisor and she didn't really have much to say....she seemed to be telling me that for accounting you would pretty much be an accountant with law knowledge, not really a solicitor/barrister...and that if you did IBUS the employers would view you more favourably as a lawyer....

the degrees here at scu don't seem that flexible though, like if i do accounting there does not seem to be any electives or opportunities to do international finance....you can in the finance strand but that is more about the asx etc....
