yeah i am a bit confused about that, does anyone know the schedule of activities for oweek for us? coz i paid for a thing on wednesday, and then in the letter from the vetsoc prez it said something about a thing on thursday? i am confused, and apparently theres a keg too? hmm, will have to get time off work.

yeah i thoguht it was from like 9 on wed, i dunno though. Do u reckon we'd be able to meet at camden? coz i dont want to go all the way into the city just to come out again, seems kinda pointless

knowing my luck i prob wont even realise what day it is and wake up at like midday. oh well, these long holidays really confuse me, i never even know what day it is. I shall have to ask my frined who is doing vet too, she is more organised than me and will prob know wat is going on.
Tomoz i am going to my friends farm to watch a cow get its infected eye removed, yay, exciting! and to make contact with the vet up there who i will hopefully be able to do work experience with in the future.

i have two birds, cockatiel (hes my best mate!) and budgie. i also have two mice. we just moved into a house, so im planning to get two bunnies soon (when we give our backyard a makeover). i really want a dog, but everyone in my family is working or at school and i dont wanna leave it in the backyard all day.
when i graduate i want to work in a mixed practice to get some broad experience
my special interests are birds and exotic pets. there arent many vets specialising in those, so i would love to contribute to this developing area of vet science.
i would also love to do postgrad study and work in emergency. i always found emergency so exciting! i met a few vets that work in emergency and they said its great
i could go on and on, but i will let others fill in some space before i continue...

i have 2 dogs- shetland sheepdogs (like miniature collies) who are the best! and also 1 goldfish, we used to have lots of little ones but they mysteriously disappeared... i think the one left ate them or something...
I'm not actually sure what i want to do when i gradute but i'm hoping during the 5 years i'll find out what i'm particularly interested in. what does emergency involve btw?
what i really want to do is travel and work, because i mean wherever you go, ppl would have animals so they would need a vet so i guess the opportunities can be endless...

there are a few 24 hour emergency hospitals around sydney and some vets work there permanently, but some work more like locums. you get stuff like stitches coming undone or hard labour or something like that. you lose a lot of animals in emergency coz you gotta think fast and you tend to make mistakes. i think its very exciting! you learn heaps of course

i want to try out both small and mixed pactices and see which i prefer, i'd love to go work in england for a year or so, apparently they love aussies coz we're such hard workers!

I have a kelpie X Border collie who is 12 (she is beautiful) a cocaktiel named max, a turtle dove named raine (a failed WIRES animal who i am now stuck with because he is too tame to release, and he's not a native anyway) an carpet python named Caramel in my bedroom, another carpet python (my escaped pet) roaming the house somewhere named solomon, a variety of mice which are all eventually eaten by my snake,

and of course lets not forget the numerous wires animals that flow through the house, the most memorable being Indy the scaly breasted lorikeet (who was an escaped pet i had for a few months) he was so cute! he'd sit on your shoulder everywhere u went. Lorikeets are so messy when u have them, but u miss them whan they are gone.

yeah emergency would be cool, added excitement and such

i met a vet that worked in england for a year. she said that the downside is that you dont get as much support (and she went when she first graduated so it must have been hard) and there are no resources like textbooks in many practices
but i would like to work in england or canada for 6 months or a year.
i wish i could have a snake, how exotic... the chances are my parents will think im joking if i even suggest it

I have 3 Rottweilers (one is just coming up to 7 weeks old now), and i got Koi's in the pond out the back. When i finish i want to get a load of experience in mixed practices while doing some courses in holistic treatments and therapies. I wouldnt mind doing a post grad in wildlife management also. Id like to do some zoo or exotic animal work also. As you can see theres alot of things i want to do, so hopefully i can get everything orgnaised and prioritised in my head before the 5 years is out.

I don't know if i'd ever work oversea's, I wouldnt mind holidaying and stuff, but i dont think i'd want to leave Australia, or my family + friends for any extended period of time.

yeah i think i'd work here first, then maybe go overseas, only for like a year though.

Snakes are quite easy pets, you just set them up in their tank, feed them once a week, handle them every so often, and thats it, no mess, no fuss. They are good because u dont have to stress about being home everyday to feed them and stuf, and they dont care if you dont give them an attention, like fish i suppose. my tank s all automated, so i hardly have to do anything for him, pretty good huh?

hey mambomeg, how do you go about owning a snake (licence and all the rest)???

hey, just wondering, how does work experience work? You have to do a certain amount of hours in years 1-3 right? Do you need to do a particular amount of hours in small animal and mixed rural practice? Do we get told where to go, or can we choose? Do you actually get to do anything, or clean out cages? Is it during the uni holidays?

You apply to NPWS for a class 1 reptile keepers licence, it costs like $40 or something, and then u can own non venomous reptiles. If u want to own venomous ones u have to have your class one licence for a year and then apply for the niext licence up. They make u sign a thing saying u may be subject to random visits to the address where the reptile is held to ensure it is being correcty cared for, but i've never been checked or anything.
Then u can buy from a breeder or a trader like Ultimate Reptiles in Adelaide, but then u have to get an import licence to bring it in to NSW.
You have to keep a log book (provided) of all reptiles in your care and send it in every year, and pay licence fees (like $20) a year.

So its a bit of a fuss to actually get the snake but after that its easy as. My snake is cranky at the moment coz he's about to shed and he is blind (they go blind before then shed coz the skin over their eyes is loose) and i have a noisy minor in my room who hasnt shut up all day, grrr.

you have to do 14 weeks before 4th year starts during the holidays (which is when you have to hand in the report for Animal Husbandry)
its 4 weeks horses, 2 weeks dairy cattle, 2 weeks beef cattle, 2 weeks sheep, 1 week poultry, 1 week pigs, 2 weeks of whatever you want (vet clinics, wildlife, more farms, etc)
you organise it through uni, they have a database of all the places you can go to and you put in your preferences before holidays start (1st years get last preference though). but you can find places on your own that are not on the database and fill in a form and give to uni. if the farms are too far away (which they usually are), you can apply for travel consideration and get 1 or 2 days off depending on how far it is
you have a list of skills saying what you have to do eg. horses: pick up feet, saddle, pigs: dock tails, inject, poultry: measure respiration rate, etc...
you will get told all these things anyway and get heaps of other info, its lots of fun. at least you will have something to do over the holidays!
