What do you guys think would be better to work at? A cinema or video store?
at a cinema you can get cool posters and id say you do less work. whereas at a video store youd get rentals. anyway, what do you guys think about this interesting topic? anyone whos worked in either want to give us the harsh reality of each job?

I've heard some bad stuff from a friend about working at hoyts. She said that there's rats (well the one she works in anyway) and having to clean the toilets and the cinemas is disgusting. I think working in a video store seems easier but I've never worked in either so oh well. :p

in a video store you have to put up with the customers who don't want to pay their fees and i think if one of the two is any safer than the other it would be the cinema.

I doubt that the TV would be in close proximity, so you couldnt exactly enjoy the vids...well not at our vid shop
at the video ezy i work at...
1) we cant see the tvs from the counter
2) we are only allowed to play the official VE preview disc for that month, or a G or PG rated kids movie.
3) it wouldnt go down too well with the bosses if we get caught not working and just watching movies...

but the ease of working there depends on what day it is. weekdays.... easy as anything. you find yourself looking for thingas to do, just to keep sane. but on friday and saturday nights its so busy u barely have time to scratch ur arse.
of course the problem is if its busier on friday and saturday nights, then they will need to roster more staff on for these nights... which means u can pretty much kiss ur social life goodbye. at least until you 'do your time' and work ur way up the hierachy.

id say cinema....
nothing beats FREE MOVIES for u and a mate!!
but i guess u would get the same at a video store neway but im sure you'd much rather see the latest movie out for free.
working at a cinema can be hard work. u have to be confident cos sometimes u will have to control large crowds and get them to queue up. u will also be telling alot of ppl off for doin stupid things.
i think the work environment in a cinema is more enjoyable tho. in my experience the quiet periods in between movie sessions was great cos u to get to socialise more with the staff and hav some fun.
as for rates of pay....well for a cinema 18 yr olds and under get the same rate of pay, as soon as u turn 19 ur pay goes up. i was getting paid $11.70 an hour as an 18 yr old...which is kinda avearge. but if ur 15 and working at a cinema, u would also get 11.70 an hour which is heaps good!
one bad thing tho is the cinema award does not entitle u to time and a half on sundays which really sucks!
on public holidays (and u will be expected to be available for most of them) the pay rate is 1.8 * ur normal wage. so in my case its around $20 an hour. that aint too bad although its lower then wat most workplaces pay on a public holiday.
yes u do get to take home posters...even standees (thats if u can fit them into ur car).
personally, i think there's just more perks working in a cinema ;)

- i get free rentals... as long as the new releases are over a month old
- im 18 and get paid $12.07 [haha beats $11.70]
- yeh we get to take the posters/stands as well

so they seem like pretty similar perks of the job... its just the environment u prefer i guess.
would u rather sweep up popcorn, sell overpriced snack foods and sell tickets?
or would you rather put dvds in cases, sell overpriced snack foods and put dvd cases on shelves?

well i actually work at hoyts and i think that it would be much better to work at than a video store. we get free movies for two people and the rest of your friends can usually get in for $7.70, also we get to eat all the popcorn and shit from candy bar (not that we are allowed to, but we do anyway) and the job never usually gets boring because there are all kinds of things happening like crazy customers and fire alarms going off all the time and hold ups and whatnot. also the people who work there (at least, the people who work at MY hoyts) are very weird and eclectic which suits my personality perfectly. i do agree though, if you aren't a confident person, you should not work at hoyts, it can be demanding at times

i used 2 work @ cinemas...

and once we had cockroaches in the food stores cupboard (where all of the popcorn and choccy's are kept)

and i found some maltesers opened (like, a rat had chewed through them, or something)
and my boss made me bag them up into lolly bags and they sold them anyway :( :( :(

i know wat u mean by overpriced food. its kinda embaressing charging someone $3.30 for a bottle of water. we get the odd customer or two complain about price but otherwise most generally know food is expensive at the cinema anyway.
ive yet to work in a video store so yeh i guess im already a little bias towards working in a cinema.
i guess making customers pay late fees is also a little hard. my friend who works in a video store had to charge a customer one day about $400 in late fees!!

our record is a $1200 late fee... it was a playstation game that was something like 3 years late. i think they just made a deal with the manager and paid $100 or something.

sooo many people come in and complain when i tell them they have a late fee, using the old 'i dont remember hiring it, so im not paying' excuse. i love using the "ok, well unfortunately when you signed the membership form to join, it means you accepted all responsibilty for any late fees on the card, whether you remember hiring them or not" line. it shuts em up pretty quickly and they pay their fees, and storm off. haha dickheads. read what you sign!
I love having that power. people can yell and abuse me as much as they want... they seem to forget that i have their home address, home phone number and mobile number sitting on the computer screen infront of me... as well as a little section that says 'Barred member? Y or N?'.... how easily an N can change to a Y if you piss me off...
