Are you a past HSC student with strengths in Maths and/or Chemistry? Do you want to be play an important role in this year's BoS Trials? :bosman:

Every year we host the BoS trial exam events in early October (see the 2021 and 2022 threads). This is usually an in-person event where we invite students to practice an unseen trial paper (written by us) under simulated exam conditions. In recent years, we ran the BoS trials for Mathematics Extension 1, Mathematics Extension 2 and Chemistry.

Behind the scenes there are multiple people who volunteer time out of their busy lives to write the trial exam content, run the event and mark student responses. These people are crucial in helping make the event a success to the benefit of the HSC student community every year. Unlike many other sites that may have commercial/monetary interests, the BoS trials are run by a team of volunteers that are all about helping the student community.

This year, we need a bit of help 🙏. We are looking for people to fill the following volunteering roles in the BoS Trials team. Details are below.

________________________________________________________________

1. Authors (and markers) for the Chemistry BoS trials
The Chemistry BoS trials only began in 2020 for the first time, with a team of people helping to write and mark the trial paper last year. Unfortunately, only some of those same people are available to help this year and hence we are currently under-resourced.

We are looking for trial exam authors who will:
  • Come up with questions and develop this year's trial paper (with our guidance on how to design the questions, but the ideas are all yours!)
  • Write up the solutions to their questions
  • Mark student responses to the questions (usually no more than 20-30 students) with support from us where feasible
Ideally, we would like someone with one or more of the following attributes in academic background and experience:
  • achieved a comfortable band 6 in HSC Chemistry;
  • tutored students in HSC Chemistry; and
  • studied/studying Chemistry (or something related) at university
You must be available to develop the BoS trial paper throughout August and September (we will provide guidance on how to do that) and be available to mark student responses from the early October event.

If you are able to fulfil this role, then your own questions will officially form part of the BoS trial papers resource, which not only helps future HSC students, but also has the visibility to be seen and referenced by teachers/tutors!

How to apply:
If this sounds like you, please send me a PM here outlining your expression of interest, including academic background/experience and availability before 31 July 2023.

PS: Note that we are ideally looking for multiple people. If we are unable to find enough suitable people by then, then the Chemistry BoS trial exam will NOT go ahead this year...

2. Markers (and authors) for the Maths BoS Trials
Our infamous Maths BoS Trials have been going on for over 10 years and in recent years we have had a shortage of markers. This is because there is often a short time between the event and the actual HSC Maths exams which makes the marking and solution writing process quite intensive and is constrained by the number of people who are available to help. This is not something that the exam authors can do themselves.

We are therefore looking for markers who will:
  • Read and understand the student responses provided (usually around 30-40 students for each subject)
  • Assess and determine the marks awarded in line with the provided solutions
Whilst we are mainly looking for markers, we would also welcome any markers who also want to help contribute questions for the trial paper during its development phase!

Ideally, we would like someone with the following attributes in academic background and experience:
  • achieved a comfortable band E4 in HSC Mathematics Extension 2;
  • tutored students in HSC Maths; and
  • studied/studying Maths (or something related) at university
You must be available throughout early October to receive and mark the student responses. We will provide solutions to the questions and guidance on how to do this.

How to apply:
If this sounds like you, please send me a PM here outlining your expression of interest, including academic background/experience and availability before 31 July 2023.
________________________________________________________________

In summary, if you are suitably qualified and want to contribute substantially to helping our HSC student community with a short-term project then you are highly encouraged to apply. Look forward to hearing from you. :)

Please also forward this to anyone you know who is suitably qualified and may be interested in helping out as well...

Final bump! Thanks to those who sent me a PM so far. Will get back to those who messaged me recently.

We still have a shortage in Chemistry so if there are any more people who can help with Chemistry that would be great…
