Seeing as how everyone did so well this year does that mean next years HSC students will face more challenging examinations. Some people are quoted as saying last years HSC exams were far more strict and difficult in terms of the marking criteria. This is clearly demonstrated with Egnlish whereby there has been an apparent spike this year compared to last year.

BTW congratulations on your awesome marks students of 2007 :)

The difficulty of the exams between each year varies dramatically.
In my opinion,

Chemistry:
2006 - Harder
2007 - Easier

English Standard:
2006 - Easier
2007 - Harder

Information Processes and Technology:
2006 - Easier
2007 - Harder

Mathematics:
2006 - Easier
2007 - Harder

Mathematics Extension 1:
2006 - Insane
2007 - Much easier

Physics:
2006 - Easier
2007 - Harder

People have their own strengths/weaknesses so it's hard to generalise and say the whole exam was easier or harder. e.g. if someone sucks at calculus and there are a lot of calculus questions in the exam, they'll interpret the test as having been harder than a year with less calculus (even though the rest of the test may have been simple)

Personally,
Advanced English - Comprehension harder, essays/creative MUCH easier
Chemistry - Harder and really ambiguous
Physics - Piece of cake
Geography - Around the same
Mathematics Extension 1 - Easier
Mathematics Extension 2 - Much easier.

Advanced English. Easier

EE1 - Harder

General Math - Same. Everybody could've done well in this test, if they studied hard enough.

Modern History - Same. Some sections were easier and others harder.

Very interesting, so what would you say was the reason for this significant increase in marks?

Aligning.

I don't mean to disparage this year's group but the government can, and probably does, manipulate the actual aligned marks so that there are always increases in the number of students getting the higher marks.

As they don't reveal the actual cut-offs we really can't say whether the cohort really is better or whether they simply lowered the cut-off to make it appear better. The people who do the work on recommending the cut-offs to the BOS don't get told whether their recommendation is accepted (or at least they weren't when I did it and I can see no evidence that they have changed that aspect of the process).

Nah raw marks were probably not dissimiliar to previous years. They probably aligned the marks more to make us feel better and to stop the /wrists phenomen that could of occured.

From the subjects i did:

Economics: same/slightly easier.
Business studies: same
Maths 2u: harder
English advanced: same
Modern history: same.

i think that the massive spike in band 6s compared to other years and also the higher aggregates to UAIs suggests the year group was the best evfer - even despite the aligning comment.

for me

drama - easier
eco - same
english adv - easier (comprehension way harder)
x 1 - same
maths adv - way harder (but im better at calculus and focus was geometric)
maths x 1 - easier
latin - same
latin x - same

for 08ers - dont make the mistake of generalising a year's worht of exams - its done independently for each subject - for example latin is almost always the exact same difficulty - extension maths, however, fluctuates heaps
