hey guys

our teacher set us some dot points to do over the holiday and theres a couple im having trouble with:

§ Provide a table which compares the process of renal dialysis with the function of the kidney
§ Provide a table in which you compare and explain the differences in urine concentration of terrestrial mammals, marine fish and freshwater fish
§ Write a short paragraph in which you explain the relationship between the conservation of water and the production and excretion of concentrated nitrogenous wastes in a range of Australian insects and terrestrial animals

im finding its difficult to compare renal dialysis and kidey function in a table, freshwater fish and marine fish arent seperated in my textbook in terms of urine concentration and i cant find information on insects for the final dot point

any help would be greatly appreciated :)

tell me you didn't spend your entire holiday holiday'ing, whilst start doing hw when school starts in 3 days?!

but oh well, who doesn't... *blushes

1) you should do a bit research on what renal dialysis is... then you will get an idea how to put it in a table. to put it in table form, consider what renal dialysis does and what it doesn't do (hint: a table should have heading of renal dialysis/kidney crossed with similar function/different function)

2) urine concentration ain't that hard... now just think in these terms: if you were a fresh water fish, you'd be drinking in water 24 7... and what happen if you drink in water 24 7?! you urinate more, and urine is much like pale yellow colour... how about if you were marine fish?! marine fish drink salted water, which to a degree DRAINS water from you body... what if you just walked under a 40C sun for 3 hours?! you go to the loo and found your urine deep yellow in colour... concentrated uring... terrestial mammal is a different matter... their urine concentration really depends on (fresh) water avaliability...

3) ditto above, with addition of one more thing: insects produce nitrogenous waste as uric acid as a powdery substance on their exoskeleton. this method is most water conserving...

In comparing renal dialysis with the kidney, your table is basically to conclude that a healthy kidney is more efficient than renal dialysis (obviously). So go through things such as a kidney works 24/7.. renal dialysis is like 15 hrs/week. Renal dialysis requires masses of dialysing fluids, where as a properly functioning human body does things like this naturally. You get the point, right?

And as said, water enters freshwater fish by osmosis. Look at the rules of diffusion/osmosis and you should be able to figure those out for yourself.

the last dot point is hard...yes...have you got the part that insects do not urinate?? they need to conserve as much water as possible, in which they get from their food...as the water travels through their body, they end up excreting a paste in the form of uric acid...
