TAXPAYERS are paying failed Labor candidate Mike Bailey $12,500 a month to provide "strategic advice" to NEW South Wales Government minister Tony Kelly.

Bailey, a weatherman also employed to read weekend weather on Channel 9, was handed the four-day-a-week, taxpayer-funded job after he failed to beat Joe Hockey in the seat of North Sydney at last November's federal election.
Bailey gave up his job as an ABC weatherman to contest the seat of North Sydney.

Last month, the veteran reporter was given the role of Nine's weekend weatherman.

As part of his new position, Bailey also reports on environmental issues for the network.
$12,500. A month. I see.

My investigative journalism has led me to deduce that Tony Kelly is an idiot.

In three years time, he SHOULD be out of a job. (I emphasis should.)

wow 150k a year! what an un-heard of, exorbitant amount of money for a high-profile, highly skilled consultant. Thats like, not in line with market rates at all.
Moar like $150,000 worth of failure.

quite possibly. i dont know what he is actually doing and how qualified he is to do it. Nor, i suspect, do you. In any case, $150k for a senior consultant is not a particularly exorbitant salary. He would have been making more as a weather man. It's really such a non-issue, but your determined to find things with the labor party to pick at. As Jon Stewart would say, you are a partisan hack.
He's a journalist. I'm not sure what his strategicconsultancy includes, but it sure didn't help him :)

Mike Bailey, MC, journalist and presenter.

Mike Bailey is one of the most identifiable and credible voices in local media.

Mike Bailey has been a part of both television and radio almost every day for more than 25 years, known especially for his weather segments on ABC-TV and Radio Networks across New South Wales each weekday.

A journalist and broadcaster, Mike Bailey has also hosted current affairs, news-talk, talkback and music programs on 2GB, 2KY, Radio 2, and several community radio outlets.

Mike Bailey presented television news bulletins on ABC-TV and the Seven Network, for over 13 years. He also produced news, current affairs programs and documentaries, and hosted AFL telecasts for three seasons.

Mike Bailey’s work in print journalism has included a weekly column with The Sun-Herald over seven years; monthly columns in gardening and surfing publications; and occasional freelance travel articles.
Whatever his skills, he was trumped by Joe Hockey. That man is a god.

Yes, Hockey "trumped" him, by getting a significant swing against him in what has traditional been one of the safest liberal seats in the country that has never been held by labor.
Four marginal seats got Liberal swings towards them. The other 146 swung in someway to Labor, some more than others. Bailey did not do anything hugely spectacular, he just rode the "KEVIN07" wave like a number of other candidates.

EDIT: One is the traditionally safe, but turned marginal Wentworth.
