cheers :D
Congrats! I'll be seeing you around then , i'm a 2nd yr student though!

You don't need to have done business studies or economics to do well in commerce. Just 2unit maths and better would be an advantage. You'll do fine!!!

I haven't chosen majors yet since i'm still going to do junior units next year. But most likely i'll be doing Marketing/Finance majors for commerce and Sociology/Gender Studies majors for Arts.

What do you want to do after you graduate???

I HATE accounting with a vengeance and Business statistics too!!!. Unfortunately you'll have to do it in first semester.

I was going to do IR & HRM but changed as i'm more inclined to marketing atm.

Sociology is the study of society and how and why we interact with each other on a small cummunity scale and large scale e.g. globalisation.

Sociology and HRM is a very good combo to do!!!

hey thx zannaz :D

also with the arts/comm degree, is it primarily focused on arts or commerce??? and another question...at the end of this course will u receive two degrees (one for commerce and one for arts) or just one combined one???

lastly, is the content in the b.com and b.arts combined degree exactly the same as if u did b.com or b.arts seperately??? therefore, if they are the same, can u have lectures and tuts with ppl soley doing the com or arts degree???

ne help from neone would be greatly appreciated :)

thanks in advance

1. the arts/commerce degree is not focused on any one degree. You do the amount of cp required by each course but you don't specialise on one particular side of the degree.
2. Yes. You will recieve two separate degrees. An arts degree and a Commerce degree. Also you get to attend two graduation ceremonies.
3. The content is exactly the same as if you were doing them separately. You don't have lectures or tutes just for B.A.,B.COM students. You do the arts units with other arts students and the commerce units with commerce students.

Hey Zannaz what first year subjects are you doing next year?
I'm doing the same thing as you, second year of arts/commerce. Don't know what I find scarier, first year of uni or being a second year stuck in a room full of first years!

I'm doing first year accounting, marketing and hrm next year, considering picking up gender studies if anthropology starts sucking.

Suvat: There are 6 compulsory units that all commerce students have to do, 3 per semester. This leaves you 1 more unit to do whatever you want.

suvat- you would want to take up claw1001 in semester 1 because you need to do some commercial law units to do an accounting major. Semester 2 last year most people doing your majors would have taken up ECMT1020 because that was part of the prerequisites to take up FINC and second year ACCT, but it looks like they've scrapped that this year. According to the 2004 handbook, you don't have to do ECMT1020 to major in accounting (or finance), but you still have to do it if you want to be CPA accredited.

pigs_can_fly- not sure about the exact requirements for combined law, but if there's a compulsory law unit then you may want to do that in place of an elective. Either that or you may be able to put off doing some of the compulsory commerce units until second year, because students doing combined degrees can do first year subjects in subsequent years.

Hey!!!
Yeah it is scary having to be stuck in first year mode surrounded buy first years, but i'm sure it'll be fine. Most of my friends are moving into 2nd year, leaving me alone, so i gotta do that whole meeting new people routine.

I'm doing acct1B, marketing principles, Microeconomics and French Introductory, Are we allowed to do gender studies? i though it was only available in 3rd yr for us??? And are we allowed to overload. beacuse i was thinking of doing 30 cp(5units) in 2nd semester? You should try sociology, it's pretty good!!!

now that enrolment is done, is it possible to add ecmt1020 to session 2? (since it's either ses 2 or summer)

I'm doing marketing principles too in semester 1...
Gender studies: I don't see why not, you can do (at least I've managed to enrolled in) a mix of senior and junior units so I guess provided you have fulfilled the prerequisites, then you can enrol in it.
Sociology sounds interesting, one of my main regrets is not doing sociology, but I've already got the next 4 years or so all planned out already. It's amazingly difficult to get it to be exactly 240 credit points!

The 5 units of study thing: I'm not sure, I managed to preenrol in 5 units of study for one of the semesters (i'm gonna drop it anyway... too much work). There's this scary looking form at

http://www.econ.usyd.edu.au/content.php?pageid=2138
that you supposedly have to fill out to do 5 units of study. But there's no mention of this on the arts website. I'm gonna pretend that if you can preenrol in it and the computer system will let you, then you can do it.

the subjects you need for a finance major are already compulsory in the commerce degree so i don't think you need to worry about what to pick in first year.
