Hey there guys,
So I'm torn, I've been studying Medical Science at unsw for 2 years now, and this year I got an offer for a combined degree in Law and science at Macquarie university. At one hand I really want to do the combined degree and on the other I only have one more year left of Medical science. There is also another issue and that is the possibility of me moving to North America by next year. My parents on one hand are kind of on my ass about finishing the degree, a degree that I really don't see the point of. Initially I wanted to do Medical science for the purpose of a future medical career but that all changed... Also my marks at uni are kinda average. To all you people doing Medical Science, please stay away, its really a dud degree and unless you want to do research and stay in labs for the rest of your life, then by all means. So What do I do? Do I take the offer and let 2 years of medical science slip, or do I continue my final year and see what else I can do? Can I defer the offer and finish off the degree?

Thanks

Not really any career prospects with just a med sci degree. cant you transfer and get course credit for your med sci subjects?

I left at the end of my second year as well, and felt the same way "only one more year, may as well stay". Leaving was the best thing I ever did. Part of the reason why I left my biomed degree because there wasn't enough specialisation, it's just too damn general. So even though I want to spend my days out in a white lab coat and in a lab, the biomed degree wasn't going to get me to the science I wanted to work with.

You certainly can defer the offer and finish off the med science degree if you wanted to do that. You can probably get credit for those 2 years for the science program. Certainly the first year subjects for sure. Have a look at the science electives Maq wants you to complete for the science portion, and try your best to get everything from UNSW credited towards that. Then I suppose you could considerate it as just tacking on a few extra years to get a law degree with it.

Maybe try explaining to your parents that if you switch courses now you're giving yourself greater job opportunities for the future, and that you don't want to be stuck in a field which you really have no desire to be in. If that fails, just tell them it's a waste of money for you to be there when you don't want to be.

Well my brother completed his Med Sci degree and said it's one of the most worthless degree unless you wanna do research. So even in that token, I'd say do the Sci/Law degree @ MACQU - more job prospects and I would assume you could transfer the credits of your Med Sci degree to your Sci degree @ MACQU.

Thanks for the replies guys, might be a lil late here but I decided to defer it, I spoke to a couple of lecturers and academics, most say that its better to have a degree written in your CV rather than having incomplete for the 2 years you have been studying. I defered the offer and hopefully I will see how things go. Expand my options here. TO ALL YOU MEDICAL SCIENCE STUDENTS, I MEAN I DON'T GET WHY THE NUMBER IS INCREASING, THE DEGREE IS A WASTE OF TIME! YOUR BETTER OFF DOING AN ARTS DEGREE IF YOU WANT TO DO MEDICINE.
