Could someone please explain to me what mechanical engineering is and what a mechanical engineer actually does?
Ive been on various university websites looking at mech eng, but they all seem to give a very broad and vague description of what it is and what one does.
Any help would be greatly appreciated =]

Try wiki but my mums colleagues' husband is a mechnical engineer and he just goes around fixing machines n shit.

he's on call so they can call him at 12am if they feel like it, but he can finish after an hrs work.

designing an air or water pump is one example out of many things you learn about in a mechanical engineering degree but in your professional career you may or may not design one but the great aspect of mechanical engineering is its flexibility compared to other majors such as mechatronic, aerospace, etc.

i got to design a machine that cuts shrubs to extract oil,
basically you must be able to design a machine to serve a certain purpose and consider constraints, cost, stability, etc.

tommykins are you sure his just not a mechanic? I though mech engineers design machinery, engines, manufacturing production type machines, design lifts/air con systems for buildings and stuff.
probably, i wasn't too sure.

it sounds like it is plausible depending on your major, because it's kinda like how they get engineers to fix the wings for aeroplanes n shit.
