Assuming you have done all the paperwork and you are successful;

Say if you were ranked 6th, then you'd get a HSC exam mark based on a mark between 5th and 6th highest exam marks, with the appropriate deviation.

If you are first, then you still get the highest exam mark (but you may have potentially gotten better than this mark, so that's too bad).

If you are first and the only person sitting the course, then it's a confusing task of allocating you an appropriate mark. This would be a unique situation and you may need to ask BOS directly about this.

The moderated assessment mark is still calculated the same way, if there is more than 1 person doing the course at your school.

Also, if my appeal is unsuccessful, obviously I'm not eligible for receiving HSC award, which means i have to do my hsc again the next year. If this is the case, are my study hours still kept so that I don't have to attend classes the next year, which means i only have to do all the assessments/trials/exams/hsc external all over again for the next year?

What? No one gets someone else's mark. That's a common misleading thought that goes around when teachers poorly explain the HSC process. For the moderated assessment mark, it's based on the mean of the raw assessment marks, the highest/lowest HSC exam marks, and the mean of the HSC exam marks. You get a mark based on how much you deviate from the mean.

Just to be clear, you don't get someone else's mark; that does not happen.

Depends on how many units you do.

I think you may need to attend the necessary hours again; you are required to attend school for at least 80% of total days, so I'd say you'd need to attend those classes again. But don't take my word on this; contact BOS if you require an answer now.

Because you do 12 units if you miss anything besides English no big deal. You wont get a mark for that course but your other 10 units will count.
If you miss more than 2units or English however you're ineligible for the HSC and will have to complete pathways. I.e. you only do the course you missed.
But they are generally very lenient with this so if your reason is not totally stupid e.g. I slept in, you should be fine.

If you have an acceptable reason you will be allocated an estimated mark based on your assessment position and the gaps between yourself and the students either side of you.

It is always preferable to sit the exam and then apply for special consideration. That way you will get the best mark for you - either the exam or just the estimate but no exam means that you can only get an estimate and have to rely fully on your cohort doing very well.

If you don't have an acceptable reason you will get zero and have to repeat the subject/s again in their entirety - classes, assessments, etc.

You will get your assessment mark if you have an acceptable reason. If not, you get 0.

If the case you got 0, it is usually treated as an outlier do the lowest person wouldn't get 0 assessment.

The question then is 'why do you have to leave the country?'

Now if it is for a holiday - not an acceptable excuse, although again the BOS may let you sit the exams in the country being visited.

If it is because your parents have to take up a job overseas arrangements can be made for you to sit the exams in the foreign country.

If it is because you are representing Australia or NSW in some event overseas again arrangements can be made for you to sit the exams in the foreign country.

If you and/or your family are being deported again arrangements can be made for you to sit the exams in the foreign country - in many instances.

In other words if it is for reasons that are justifiable you can still sit the exams (exams are sat overseas every years.) Some years ago the Australian junior Rugby League Team was in Britain during the HSC and the boys in Year 12 sat their exams there.

NB These examples are only a few of the ones I have known of for students sitting their exams in foreign countries.

Like cem said, you need to consider the necessity and reason of leaving the country. You should prepare the necessary paperwork now or at least very soon and get into contact with BOS to present your situation and see what they decide is the appropriate course of action.

Yeah being overseas is generally not an accepted reason to miss the exams. They normally organise for you to take them at the Australian embassy at the country you are in. But I don't think in any instance you'd get out of doing them.

I know some rep sportspeople who did some of their HSC exams overseas at the embassy.

You will get your assessment mark if you have an acceptable reason. If not, you get 0.

If you miss an examination without a valid reason, you don't just get 0. The entire course is cancelled, including the assessment mark. It is like you never started that course.
