Yep, but they still get their mark averaged with the mark that corresponds with their rank.
No, unless you are sick (and receive an estimate) the course is cancelled and removed from your HSC.

Wow. You miss one examination and it's totally removed? So those that sleep in and miss an exam with 10 units don't get their HSC/ATAR wow.
Yep, that's correct. You must sit for, and make a serious attempt, at the relevant examination.

Jesus Christ, so you're supposed to just jump into the exam straight after breaking your arm? That's fucked, especially considering you are unlikely to have practiced with a scribe.
If you have a satisfactory excuse then you will still be given a mark. If you choose to simply not turn up then you get zero (and it does appear on your HSC record - have had students do that, particularly with their final exam and simply decide they can't be bothered to do another exam believing that their other exams are good enough anyway). It isn't removed in my experience unless the student formally drops the subject before the exam.
This from the HSC Rules and Procedures:
"If you are absent from an entire examination and lodge an illness/misadventure application that is declined by the BOSTES, you will not receive a result in that course and that course will not appear on your BOSTES record. This could mean that you become ineligible for the award of the Higher School Certificate."
A zero mark does not happen
