I thought it was never told to the school - they call you and you tell them if you want?

schools (including principals) find out student's hsc marks for each subject, not uai's.

no, i dont think they are told your uai, but they can access your results.
I thought they'd only know the results for our subjects? but not the actual UAI??

no i dont think they get the uai's unless you tell them... they get the hsc marks because not everyone applies for a uai anyway...

apparently only about 30% of the state which i find weird... cause whenever you ask somehow how did they go in their hsc... you just assume they will tell you their uai... cause thats the only indication of overall achievement unless they tell you each subject individually... and its weird to think only like 30% of people get it

Nope. Principals only get our HSC results, they only find out our UAIs by us telling them or they use a program to estimate our UAIs with the given HSC results.

Ok that's good.
I have to say that for some reason not having my results published has taken away so much angst.
I really do think they should stop it altogether. Marks are such a personal thing, and I know it is recognising achievement, but at the same time it's highlighting 'non-achievement'.

But if your marks appeared in the paper doesn't that mean its an achievement?

May I ask what is actually published in the paper (not the Board Of Studies website).
Is it your name and courses that are above or equal to 90? And School?

Also I think your name and the Univerisity entery for your course is also published? Like if you get in your course or not.

I agree sugared plum. I think some people might be ashamed of their marks, regardless of how high they are, which they are more than allowed to be...

Yes - that is all for the merit list.

From todays letter from the BOS:

In addition the media will receive the names and schools of all students who achieve a mark of 90% or more in any course. This mark will be the average of your assessment mark and your examination mark. The board will not provide the media with the names or the results of any other students. If you do not wish your name to be printed in the media please write to the Student Enrolments and Credentialling Section, GPO Box 5300, Sydney 2001 before the 8th of December 2003

I got marks over 90 in the 2002 HSC but did not appear in the paper, at my request.
To do this, in about June, I rang the Board of Studies and asked them if my results could be confidential. They then made me fax them a form with my details, such as student number and school, and after that I wasn't listed in the paper, nor on the Board of Studies website.
