A section in a newspaper or something that is written by the editor or reader in response to an issue.

You have to:
  • Describe the issue in objective language (a small part)
  • Express your opinion in subjective language regarding the issue (main bit)
  • Suggest possible solutions to the issue (concluding sentence or something)

So is it written in a letter-type format?

Not in like the "Dear Someone" sense. Although it is a personal opinion based writing, you're not directing it to a particular person like in a letter.

You should have a look at the 10 marker question in the 05 SC English paper. It was an editorial.

And use facts and statistics to support your argument, even if they are fake. =D

Wow thanks I would've had no idea...

Edit: Ok I have another question. In a letter, are you actually supposed to include the address and everything? I had to do that for a school task once and it seemed pretty pointless...

And has anyone here read the responses for the news article (the one for the school website) in the Standards Packages? Why is it that so many of the high-mark responses were written in columns on the page?
Are we really meant to write a news article in columns even though they give us whole lines????

Yea you have to, so the marker knows that you know the proper format of a letter.

There was a letter question in last year's paper I think, and they set it out so that you didn't have to write the address or anything... It started off like this:

Dear elkfja;wlefjasldfkj,

Thank you so much, Dalie. So are you allowed to just make up statistics and put them in your writing?
The chances are the markers aren't gonna know if they're true or not unless it's something like 'Australian population will grow to 100 million by the end of the year' :)

Okay, so what's the difference between an editorial and a feature article?

:/

Have you by any chance got the Sun Herald at your place? There's an editorial on pg 50 that was written about the news article on page 31.

So an editorial, it would seem, is meant to be written about another article.
Although perhaps you shouldn't be relying on me... I'm not really sure :)
