Probably not a lot really. The fundamentals of biology haven't changed much in the past 50+ years.

There might have been a syllabus change through the editions, since I know Social Science books publish newer editions due to changes in the syllabus.

Usually different editions update information by adding/removing relevant/irrelevant information according to syllabus changes etc.

Sometimes newer editions fix up typos or errors in the solutions etc.

When it comes to something like a Biology textbook that is so syllabus-focused, you want to have the most recent one as possible.

For subjects like Maths however (syllabus hasn't changed since 1980), old editions are okay.

not only a syllabus change, but also errors & mistakes may have been corrected. Newer editions are always better :)
