Hello, I haven't quite performed very well in 3u maths so I'm pretty sure an E4 is out of the picture.
For the HSC exam, around what mark would be equivalent to an E3 and E2? (I don't know what the test is out of... 70? lol)
The bonus point system for UNSW is pretty good, I think its 2 points for an E3 and 1 for an E2 :p I sound pretty weird when I say that I'm aiming for an E2 though.
I'm currently ranked 27th/78 people in a school ranked in the low 60's. Does it seem likely that I'll receive an E3? I only achieved a 40/70 for my trials - i know I stuffed up big time argh! and for my half yearly's i got 48/58 (ranked 15th after half yearly).

Aiming for an E2 is not worth the benefit of 1 bonus point. If you put in a little more effort to gain the E3, that will probably add more to your ATAR than the 1 bonus point, so you're sort of losing out (if you have the potential to get an E3).

You should be able to get into the E3 range. Over half the state achieves an E3, and I reckon you're in the top 80% of the state, so E3 should be achievable.

The raw mark for an average E3 is around 50-60%.

I'd say around 40/70 would be E3 range in externals. Previously circa 45/84 was enough to get a E3 (slightly variable from year to year depending on difficulty of exam that year).

Depends if you want a high E3 or low E3. Around 40/70 sounds right.
Oh sweet. Thanks heaps haha. I spoke to my tutor and he said I should be sitting in the middle of E3. I performed quite well at the start of the year, however I just blanked out during trials... it was a nightmare.
Yeah, I guess all those morning classes aren't worth getting just 1 bonus point, I was really hoping for it to count in my atar at the start of the year lolol.. maybe it might still, who knows?! I've got 11 units. But nevertheless, getting an E3 means 2 bonus points so I'm quite happy :)

How is that possible O_O, 40/70 isnt even 70%, HOW CAN IT BE AN E3??? Explain to me please

So if i get 40/70 i'll get scaled up?
what happens if i get 50/70 - what band will i get?

You need to understand that schools set papers are different levels of difficulties. You may be getting 95% on easy exams, and someone else might be getting 70% on a very hard exam. So you can't just say you beat them. You can't just think 70% is the same at your school or the school I went to or wherever. Your school might have an easy marking criteria, your teachers might be giving out half marks (which isn't done in the HSC), half your class might be nagging for extra marks etc. Point is, you can't immediately compare your experience of 70% with the mark range for an E3. Note an E3 is the HSC mark equivalent of 35 to 44 out of 50.

40/70 will probably be aligned to an HSC mark of 42/50 (±2). 50/70 will probably be aligned to 46/50 (±1), but I would say an E4.
