So i am running 12 units atm and am really contemplating dropping to 10. The subject i was thinking of dropping was Earth as some of you may know but I do relatively well in it so it could be a very bad decision. I want to keep math extension 2 now as well as I enjoy the challenge and am planning to do some form of engineering/ math major so will be doing that math anyway in a year so may as-well get used to it. The thing is , my ranks in math atm are not where I want them to be (only in the top half for a top 75 ranked school) so Im hoping I can salvage them as it contributes alot for my ATAR and doing average would be detrimental.

I would like to know how my outlook though looks for 4u math as Im probably not the most naturally smartest student but can do well if i try hard enough. We have done 1/2 of complex numbers and 1/2 proof. I find geo apps of complex numbers very hard and in terms of proofs there are obviously a significant number of questions that are very hard.

anyway I really would like some advice. Should i stay on 12 units to have earth as my backup if i bomb anything (which i could probably band 6)? Or should i just lock in for 10 units and am just gonna have to grind math.

Also, id just like to add that dropping earth would be a bit depressing fo rme as all my mates are in it and the teacher is a goat.

I'd keep earth. I was in a similar predicament as u but instead of earth, I did investigating science (which also scales terribly). Just be sure that you can get a B6 in earth. I got a B6 for investigating and even that didn't contribute to my atar in a positive or negative way. Its js one of those easy filler subjects that u can replace a bomb with.

in terms of 4U don’t expect to fully understand all the topics that quickly, I found it took MONTHS to marinate in, so when I returned to the topic it made more sense. I also had a *ahm* “bad” teacher who barely taught and was away during and after trials and we didn’t even finish content before hsc. I also found complex geo really difficult to comprehend at first, only got comfortable with it when revising for trials. In my opinion tho complex and proofs is the hardest it gets for 4u, the other topics aren’t as hard in the way that complex and proofs require crazy abstract out of the box thinking, they’re just really long and tedious questions (with very dialled down abstract thinking). While idk anything about earth sci, my advice would be to stick with it for now, and hopefully you’ll find 4U easier as you go to other topics and look back on the hard ones. I knew people who dropped like end of term 2 before trials at beginning of term 3 so you’ve got time, esp if you find earth sci easy. Good luck!
