I have tried to hotlink with geocities, but only with jpg's.

Why would you want to link an image as text?
(it serves no purpose?)

Unless you tell people to rename the file extension, but that defeats the purpose of hotlinking, you might as well link directly (URLs). The reason I use graffiti is that I'm able to link the pictures in my posts, and have them display in my post (instead of telling people to click here, or save as, or goto, or copy/paste the URL, rename file as _____ and so on :))

no FTP's, although i don't think they'll mind since we pay for our uploads, and the upload speeds are shit...

Australias broadbnad industry makes any persons experience in computing hell, i mean i havent set up my own FTP before in my life because its literally impossible to test it out since uploading is counted my usage.
InterNode Flatrate is where it's at. 99AUD for 512/128 and no shaping that I've heard from anyone.

Ryan is talking about using the FTP protocol, I believe, uploading via an FTP browser (such as CuteFTP or FlashFXP, WSFTP, etc), not the "upload manager" with many free webspace providers.

You can upload files through their manager, but not via FTP (or rather, brinkster does not provide FTP access... which is what I assume Ryan was talking about)

yes, web-based uploading is annoying when you want to upload 1000 files structured in folders.
