Hi guys,

With one term of yr 11 done, I was wondering what subject I should drop for yr 12...

Here r my subjects and marks in them (I performed kinda worse than expected 😥)
Eng Adv: 90%
Math Adv: 40% (YIKES) --> dropped down to std this term tho
Chem: 68% (some ppl got full marks so I think this was js a skill issue on my side)
Bio: 73%
Business studies: 90%
Society and Culture: 92%

Rn it seems like I'd go for chem but my bio teacher just lowkey shows up to class and barely teaches (she's a nice lady but yeah...). Also, I need a looot of catching up for the bio prelim anyway. I do find chem really, really challenging tho but idk, but maybe I can make an amazing academic comeback or something. That being said, no one got a band 6 in chem last year, whereas 3 people got it in bio.

My atar aim is 93+ :)
Any other advice would be sincerely appreciated.

um finish prelims first and then gauge. dont make rushed decisions that you'll regret soon
Okay... sorry I would just feeling a bit overwhelmed (with all the content and stuff I have to catch up on) when I wrote that but thanks, I'm def gonna think about it more after prelim. Thanks for your response!!! :]

I actually don't know most of my ranks yet 😥 my teachers said they need to finalise reports and stuff before they let us know. Aside from that I also have to note that we r a really big cohort with around 150 ppl doing chem and over 190 doing bio. Ik people say that u need to be like a really high rank in order to do good, but idk. 😔😔

honestly you only need to rank exceptionally across everything if youre aiming for an atar in the high 90s but tbh just wait for prelims before u start considering dropping anything cos u never know if one day things will just click for u in ur weaker subjects

I wouldn't make the decision this early and unless you are really sure abt dropping a subject. I waited until after term 1 in Y12 to drop my final subject after weighing my marks, my enjoyment of the subject, school performance and the teacher. Also be aware of uni assumed knowledge (you don't have to do the subjects the uni requires but they may assume you know the content). E.g. I dropped Econ going from Y11 to Y12 since my teacher was awful and the school historically wasn't as good at economics especially since I wanted to pick up Ext 2 Maths. Then after 1 term of Y12 I dropped German cause the subject was way too high workload and I was confident enough in my other subjects (Eng Adv, Ext 1/2 Math, Bio, Modern History)

Performance wise, telling ur marks and not having info of ranks and band 6 historical data for the school is hard to say whether a 93+ is easily achievable but also ranks can change drastically from Y11 to 12 and even during the year itself between exams. But judging based on ur subjects, you will probably need most of your subjects to be band 6 or around there for a 93+ ATAR. Standard 2 Maths will drag a bit but if you can do better in Eng Adv, BIo or Chem, then it wouldn't be a huge concern.

Yoooo, tysm for the advice!!! Idk why but I was assuming that ppl tend to drop a subject after immediately entering yr 12, however I think that I'll prob wait after term 1 (consulting with my teachers and whatever other stuff) before making my final decision.

Standard 2 Maths will drag a bit
Also, if I manage to get a band 6 in maths std, would my atar be okay? -- soz I don't know too much about scaling and stuff.

I wouldn't worry about scaling that much about this point, but I used the atar calcs and most point to around a band 6 mark for all your subjects for a 93+

I also did poorly in adv term 1 and am doing extension 2 now. I wouldn’t rush to drop yet. My chem mark was also around 60%, and now it’s above 90 and I’ve gone up 60 ranks. I would slow down a bit see where you are losing marks and see how to distribute your study time/get as much help from school as you can (talk to your teachers after lesson/in breaks if you can). Bio is not as good in year 11, but it is something that you can probably self study quite effectively (again idk you or your school). Seems that English business and sac are going good though so good on you! I think year 12 is a lot more interesting so try and give subjects a bit more time. I think bio/chem aren’t representative of yr 12 especially and I wouldn’t worry about atar too much esp at this point. It’s basically a get ahead for unI, definitely go for it but it’s not the be all end all. Right now, getting into good study habits and preferably getting ahead/trying not to fall behind/exam technique should be your priority. Don’t forget to have fun! Senior years can be stressful so don’t forget to go out with friends sometimes, it will help mentally and isn’t a waste of time. You’re doing better than I was at that point of year 11 in english and chem and I think you can certainly do well in those subjects judging from other remarks made. So GL!

TLDR; DO NOT DROP ANYTHING YET
the first term of year 11 is not indicative of the whole 2 years of HSC and you can’t pick things back up again (aside from some English levels at certain points). Remember, if you end up hating a subject (not just on one topic) that leaves you with the option of dropping it later, but not if you drop now

if you did drop to std maths try and get full marks because the scaling is wack (although scaling is a dumb concept anyway, at least how it’s described online is totally wrong)

Also, in some subjects sets you don’t need a single band 6 for that atar. Each band 6 is a different difficulty to get and not band 6 =/ doing badly. With your subjects that English will help a lot, you’d need to do well in std maths and probably chem/bio with the sac and business. Obv marks now are not at all related to year 12 so in the end they don’t matter at all beyond early entry (and early entry is legit like 1-2 months early max now for FIRST ROUND anyway
