Like snakeoils asked in the Advanced forum ;) ,
what texts are you guys doing?

Our class do:

Module A: Genre
Elective 3: The Essay

*Michel De Montaigne: The Essays, A Selection
*Virginia Woolf: A Room's of One's Own
*George Orwell: The Penguin Essays of George Orwell

Interesing eh? :D
There seems to be a lot of people doing Crime Fiction though. Why is it so popular?

Hmm, well we're doing Acts of Reading and Writing and last year our school was the only one to do it !!! No word if its the same this year, but it means there are no resources on it, no lectures, everything just completely ignores it.

Our texts are
The History of Reading - chunkous non fiction book. Its the core text so we have to write on it.

If on a Winter's Night a Traveller - A cool, head-spinny postmodern book.

Patchwork Girl - A frustrating but interesting hypertext. Weird to study because it is on a computer, can't actually bring it to class

Letters to Alice - Quite predictably a book of letters to a girl called Alice.

I like the elective we do, but then its weird, because if we turn out to be the only people doing it again, the only people I will be compared against will be those in my class :( .

We got showed a Seachange episode & she said we could use that as our supp text. I'm thinking of just using an article somewhere that shows one of the paradigms in terms of global/local tension or something.

Module A: Genre
Elective 2: Crime Fiction
(correct me if i'm wrong, but we're doing CF)

*Howard Hawks: The Big Sleep
*Tom Stoppard: The Real Inspector Hound
*David Guterson: Snow Falling On Cedars

I'm not sure on the author of Snow falling ...
but i'm sure we're doing the novel, not the film

So it's big sleep, real inspector, and snow falling

:)

Half yearly tomorrow
:argue:

I wouldn't say it's easy :)
you've just got to know a lot of the jargon and terms

e.g. whodunit, country house, hardboiled, yadda yadda...
watch a movie, read a play,
know the background in depth
learn everything about the genre
techniques
societal values
a few quotes here and there
more techniques and conventions of the crime fiction

I had my ext-1 half yearly today,

it was fairly 'easy' for me,
but i couldn't manage my time!

2 sections,
2 hrs,
i spent 1.5 hrs on the first section (8pgs)
and only 30 mins on the second (4 pgs)

they're both of equal value
so i'm hoping the first essay would be better than the composition task that i wrote :)

fingers crossed.

I *always* do that... I spend more time on the essay and write a shitty 2 page story for the composition even though sometimes they are worth the same

i guess it's easier to follow a structured essay, 'crap on' for a while until you've said all that you could, and then having to do some (gasp) 'real' *thinking* for the composition

hehe
i can never be too imaginative when the time calls for it,
i.e. during exams. at other times, when i'm not under pressure (time constraints) then it is another matter entirely.

i hope that my marks'll even out though,
say 85-90% for the essay on genre/conventions,
and even 60-70% for the composition task

the weird thing was, you had to specify the audience, purpose, context and relation to the entire work BEFORE you wrote the composition!

we had to present a substantial piece from the text,
so it was kind of hard 'predicting' what you'll be writing about in advance, it should have been left until the end (kind of like a dissection of your composition, analysing it, explaining features, reflection statement-esque type end to the composition)

My school is doing Retreat From The Global. We're doing:
  • "The Shipping News"
  • Seamus Heaney's poetry
  • "The Castle"
.

We got shown the first two episodes of "Seachange", and for our first assessment task, we were allowed to use em as related text, but for our half yearly we had to find our own.

It's pretty hard to find anything besides movies that are related to RFTG... and the movies have to be set in the present or recent past (i.e. last 50 or so years) because thats about the time period that the whole concept came about.

Movies include:
  • "Fight Club" (my favourite - Brad Pitt!!)
  • "I Am Sam"
  • "The Beach"
  • "Shrek" (that's a bit iffy though)
  • "The Lion King" (that's a bit of an iffy one too)
If I think of any more then I will post. Hopefully this will help my fellow RFTGer's =]
