hey, my friend is ranked equal 3rd in chemistry, however he should not be, throughout the year, on my assessment sheets i wrote what each person got (only 6 in class) i added each up taking into account the weigting of each task, and the 2 people ranked equal 3rd are actually 5% different of the course different. my friend was willing to look past it if the other person ranked 'equal 3rd' did good in externals... we talked to her and he said she didnt
my friend is expecting 75-85% raw whilst other person is expecting <50% raw
another problem is, the person ranked second thinks he got around 55% =S
so my questions are:
-should my friend appeal (oh yea, at my school we have things called mentors ie teacher that are supposed to help us through the year, my chem teacher was that persons mentor thats was supposed to be 4th not equal 3rd) and get his rank back

-what impact will the guy who had rank 2 have on my friend?
-and if he should appeal or whatever its called, how do you do it, do you see the principal or the teacher that made the mistake
-also is my writing down the marks throughout the year good enough evidence?

thanks

i have heard of similar situations to urs... i dunno wat u shuld do but i have some info that may help u... It is my understanding that head teachers have the right to 'scale' student's internal marks... could this be the reason your friend is equal 3rd?

I've never heard of that and couldn't that give rise to possible bias affecting results etc etc?

The person ranked 2nd will basically get the highest calculated internal moderated mark so aside from that it won't have much of an impact on your friend.

I'm unsure of the entire appeal process, but i'd definitely look into it. Your written down marks might not constitute as evidence but if BoS investigate they'd probably be given the same marks and would be able to work it out for themselves.

I actually don't know if you can appeal now, especially after all the marks have been sent to BoS :/

ahh k thanks, yea i dnt see how they could be given the right to adjust marks/internal ranks... what they worked for is what they deserve.

on students online it has the final date to appeal to ranks its like 18th november. we are going into the school tomorrow to check it out

Yep. From what I've heard of previous years in a few days time you'll be able to log into NSW Students Online with your Student ID and PIN and see your internal assessment marks/ranks. I think this is used as a mechanism for people to appeal if there are any errors, and it is useful for some students whose schools did not reveal their ranks (for whatever lame reason).

Also, a similiar thing happened with me for English Extension 1.
I ranked equal 1st even though I surpassed the person who ranked equal to me in every internal assessment. It doesn't really make any sense.

The 'lame reason' is that schools that do that are actually following the BOS rules which say that students aren't supposed to get their ranks until after the final exams but most schools ignore that rule.

Schools can adjust marks but...they can't change ranks or relative gaps so say we look at my class's marks and feel they they don't give a true indication of the range of abilities or capabilities of the students we can apply a calculation such as adjusting the standard deviation to make the marks more realistic.

We can NOT ever change the ranks so if a student stuffs up a task and should be doing better than another student we can't say Student A is clearly better than Student B but unfortunately handed in part of his assessment task late and therefore lost 50% of the available marks for that section costing them first place but we will give them outright first anyway.

Oh, I never knew BOS has rules against releasing ranks before the HSC. I guess that makes sense though. Thanks for the info.

It is actually in the Rules and Procedures booklet that is given to all candidates - http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/syllabus_hsc/pdf_doc/hsc-rules-procedures-09.pdf- After the final HSC examination, you can obtain your rank order for assessment in each course via Students Online or from your school. If you feel that your placement in any course is not correct, you should talk to your teacher and you may apply to your principal for a review.

Some schools interpret that to mean that they can't give you the ranks until after the final exams, which are this Friday, and I know that whenever we have asked our Senior staff in the past that has been their interpretation based on instructions from the BOS but this year we had to have the students sign off on their final ranks.

My point is that some schools take the section in the Rules and Procedures to mean that you can't get your ranks until this Friday afternoon but more and more are giving them out at the end of Term 3 or even earlier.

yea, they should have sent you a pin aswell to log on.

anyhow, we got the ranks sorted out, the teacher said my friend was 3rd and other person was 4th, there must have been a mistake when printing reports with the ranks on it... i cant help but to think she is lying because she told us in class in the last days of last term yr 12 that they were equal 3rd... we will find out on the 13th when the ranks are available via students online

From what i understood from this teacher [i wasnt really paying attention] that head teachers may scale internal marks to reduce the large gaps between student marks so as to avoid higher calibre students being 'scaled down' by the lower marks...i wonder if its true
