Usually if you have an inverse function:
e.g. a simple case
y = ln x => x = ey
dx/dy = ey
dy/dx = 1/ey
= 1/x

thanks trebla would u know any set of exercises from a 3u textbook or 2u where this technique needs to be employed

Any textbook has exponential/logarithmic functions. Fitzpatrick 2U Chapter 18 comes to mind.
